The Former U.S. President That Grace Slick’d Slip Acid Into His Drink To Mellow Him Out

4 Min Read

Through her interviews and social media platforms, Grace Slick often expressed opposition to Donald Trump’s ideals and how he ruled the US in 2017-2020. In that period, she created art pieces named ‘Trump Chunk’ and ‘Orange Is The New Stupid,’ referencing the former President.

Years before Trump, Slick also showed disagreement with President Richard Nixon, to the point of attempting to drug him during a meeting in the ’70s. So, asked what she would give to Trump if given the chance in a 2017 chat, the singer told Variety:

“Acid, because I don’t think he’d [do] too well with that. It’s an ego-destroying thing where you are not in control. You’ve got to know what you’re doing with it. You’ve got to have somebody who is not high to make sure you don’t decide you’re a raven and fly off the roof. There are all kinds of things about it that are tricky.”

Slick’s Thoughts On Trump’s Presidency

Trump won the 2016 elections over Hillary Clinton despite losing the popular vote by nearly three million votes. Sharing her thoughts about this result during the interview, Slick went on:

“We’ve got a president who is orange — everybody’s least favorite color. Bill Maher said never underestimate the stupidity of the American public, and, at this point in time, he is right. But I realized what a patriot I was when he got elected [because] it made me so sad thinking about how there were 12 or 15 guys who, now 240 years ago, started an entire country.”

Talking about the difference between Trump and the founders of the US, she explained:

“Although they may not have practiced all their ideas — they had slaves and were talking about how all men were free — some in the Constitution are still used. And they were wonderful ideas as far as how to treat each other and yourself. Then you get this nut-job goofball as our President, and it’s embarrassing. He shouldn’t be running a country. Guy is a mess.”

The Nixon Incident

Despite going to the same college as his daughter, Slick was not very fond of Nixon’s rule in the ’70s, either. But she still accepted to join the President for tea at the White House.

Sharing a common stance against war, the Jefferson Airplane frontwoman and Abbie Hoffman brought a handful of LSD to the event, planning to mix it with Nixon’s drink. Slick recalled the memory by saying:

“And I had about 600 micrograms of acid in my pocket which I had wanted to plant into Richard Nixon’s tea, cause the stuff is tasteless, and send him to the moon.”

The plan didn’t work out, though, as Paul Kanter once shared:

“They, for their mutual benefit, denied her entrance to the White House. Could have changed the history of the United States had Richard walked in and had some tea.”

The singer didn’t face trouble for the LSD. Still, the incident drew the FBI’s attention, causing them to do a background check and record her as ‘an impulsive, thoughtless, rather wild, irresponsible young lady’ who was ‘inclined to make a spectacle of herself.’
