Joe Walsh’s daughter, Lucy, revealed in a recent conversation with People how she disobeyed his father’s rule against falling in love with musicians.
Lucy initially recalled the moment when she first saw her father in a new light. It was a moment of transformation for the musician, who had recently become sober, sporting a drastic change in appearance with platinum blond hair. This encounter, which took place in a store aisle when Lucy was just 12 years old, marked a significant shift in their relationship.
A Complicated Relationship
In her new book ‘Remember Me as Human,’ Lucy delves into her complex relationship with her father. Born to Joe and his third wife, Jody, Lucy experienced the emotional toll of their divorce at a young age. Joe’s absence due to touring commitments and substance abuse issues left Lucy grappling with feelings of abandonment and unworthiness. She explained:
“I equated him leaving all the time to him not loving me, for me not being worthy enough to stay. And it wasn’t that at all. My dad is a very famous musician. He’s required to be gone most of the time.”
A Rule Defied
However, Joe’s journey to sobriety presented an opportunity for reconciliation. At the age of 12, Lucy found herself at her father’s bedside, where they began to mend their fractured relationship. With Joe’s sobriety, Lucy discovered a newfound connection through their shared love of music and humor. Yet, Despite Joe’s rule forbidding Lucy from falling in love with a musician, she found herself drawn to exactly that, as she disclosed:
“The rule in my house with my dad was that I was not allowed to fall in love with a musician. So, of course, I did. Every chance I could get!”
Married to musician Will Sweeny since 2021, Lucy reflected on how her relationship has helped heal her heart. Through her book and personal journey, Lucy emphasizes the importance of accepting the humanity in all of us. Realizing that her father was simply human, with flaws and struggles like anyone else, has been a transformative lesson for Lucy. Lucy is not the only child of Walsh; she is joined by siblings Emma Kristen Walsh, Emerson Walsh, and Alden Walsh.
