“Yeah, I’d say that’s probably pretty true. Everyone’s too sort of polite and I think it’s more the culture of not being allowed to have an opinion really,” Hawkins said. “I used to like it when bands came out and said, ‘Yeah, that’s sh*t. That’s good, whatever.’ You know, because to be a sort of cultural barometer and have opinions that influence the sort of choices that young listeners might make. To do that you need to have a strong opinion and to inspire strong opinions yourself and or to inspire in general really.”
Hawkins further elaborated on how social media dynamics have shifted the music industry landscape. He noted that individual band members often have larger social media followings than the bands themselves. This, he believes, contributes to the overall politeness and risk-averse behavior in rock.
“But yeah, bands have become too polite. And I think that’s probably why rock in general is failing. But there are some interesting statistics about bands and actual musical collectives and how the charts are dominated by individuals. I think some of that is to do with social media and the way you want to have a look behind the curtains. Like individuals in bands often have more of a following in the social media world than the band that they’re in, which is the creative entity that they’re releasing music under,” he continued.
Hawkins concluded by emphasizing his own approach to this cultural shift. “So, the world’s a bit f*cked. And I think that’s actually one of the side effects of it is everyone’s trying to be nice cuz they’re like, ‘Oh, better not be nice cuz otherwise nobody will want to talk to us anymore.’ Whereas I couldn’t give a sh*t about that to be honest.”
