Taylor Momsen On How Losing Chris Cornell Reinforced Her Bond With Soundgarden

The Pretty Reckless was the opening act of Soundgarden’s 2017 spring tour. This was pretty exciting for Taylor Momsen since she would be playing with one of her idols. However, as some may remember, this tour featured Chris Cornell’s last performance. Reflecting on this tour in an interview she attended with NME, Momsen explained how the difficult times she shared with Soundgarden members formed a strong bond between them.

“I’ve been a massive Soundgarden fan forever – they had a massive impact on my musical taste,” said Momsen, expressing her admiration for Soundgarden and stressing that the band also impacted her career in the rock scene. “The first time I heard them, I fell in love.”

While she admired the band so much, Soundgarden’s request to The Pretty Reckless to tour with them in 2017 was unbelievably meaningful for her. She recalled, “I couldn’t f*cking believe it. And I got to know them all really well on that tour; we formed a very meaningful friendship.

Taylor continued, “Obviously, we all went through a lot of tragedy at the end of that tour, but that probably reinforced our bond even more. You always hear the phrase ‘don’t meet your idols,’ but it’s always been so amazing with them. They’re the coolest people, so down to earth, so genuine. They’re very dear friends of mine, and I feel very fortunate.”

The tragedy Momsen refers to was Chris Cornell’s suicide in May of the year they were on tour. Unfortunately, he was found dead in his hotel room in Detroit after the Soundgarden concert at the Fox Theater. It is known that Cornell, who decided to end his life at the age of 52, had struggled with depression throughout his life.

Of course, Momsen would have never guessed that such a tragic incident would occur when she first got the offer to play with her dream band. Undoubtedly, they have been through tough times but have gotten through them together, which helped them create a friendship that clearly means so much to the rockstar.
