In a new interview with the Daily Mail, Rod Stewart expressed his disappointment in Donald Trump, describing the transformation of his once friend into someone he can no longer recognize.

The comments from the musician come at a critical time as Trump gears up for the 2024 Presidential Election, potentially impacting his campaign. Stewart shared memories of a friendship that flourished due to their proximity in Palm Beach, Florida.

A Friendship Fades Amid Political Ambitions

The pair, who have known each other for decades, celebrated many Christmases together, with the rocker performing at Trump’s events. However, according to Stewart, the man he knew has drastically changed, as the singer disclosed:

“He’s not the guy I met 20 years ago… I used to go to his house every Christmas and do concerts. He was a good guy. But he’s turned into somewhat of a monster.”

The Catalyst Of Change

The rift between Stewart and Trump widened due to Trump’s controversial comments and attitudes, particularly about women. Lady Penny Lancaster, Stewart’s wife, played a role in this change of heart. Disappointed by Trump’s ‘disrespectful and dated views of women,’ Lancaster discouraged Stewart from continuing their social visits. Stewart recalled in a chat with Scottish Field magazine last year:

“I have a house in Palm Beach just up the road from Trump. I used to go to his Christmas party and the balls he held, but my wife said ‘no.’ There was stuff he was coming out with, what he was saying about women he had known in the past, and Penny said, ‘You’re not going – he’s a disgrace.'”

Reflecting On Trump’s Presidency

Despite the estrangement, the musician acknowledged Trump’s kindness in the past, including gestures like offering his golf course for Stewart’s friends to use. However, he has been critical of Trump’s tenure as president, questioning his moral compass while acknowledging the country’s performance under his administration. Yet, Stewart attributes much of the success to the groundwork laid by Obama, suggesting Trump merely continued the positive trend.

As the United States approaches the next presidential election, Trump is seen as a strong contender, with many betting on his return to the White House. He is expected to face Joe Biden, whose presidency has been marred by various challenges, leading to dwindling confidence among some Americans.
