5 Min Read

In a recent interview with Metal Hammer, Synyster Gates confirmed that no new music is on the horizon for Avenged Sevenfold. While talking about the younger bands in the scene, Gates also mentioned Sevenfold’s own plans. He said:

“…No more new music, maybe I could think about a new song in five years. We’re not planning anything new, but it (young artists) gets you excited.”

As for the young bands that excite Gates. he mentioned:

Kim Dracula, they’re fearless. Their ability to just be themselves and their confidence, it’s mind-blowing. I’m sure you’re going to see a really unique career there.”

When it came to his ‘personal favorite,’ well, that was 100 Gecs, a duo that pushes the boundaries of more far-out contemporary music. Gates added:

“A personal favourite of mine is 100 Gecs. Jesus, they’ve just turned music upside down. I was toast after [Life Is But A Dream…] Then their album came out just before we released our record and I was like, ‘Hey Matt (Shadows), wanna go write some crazy shit?’ They completely re-energised me.”

Gates Is Proud Of Sevenfold’s New Album

Younger bands aside, Gates also expressed great pride in their new album  ‘Life Is But a Dream…,’ which was released earlier this year. He stated that, although the album is still fresh, he doesn’t listen to it as much as he used to. He said:

“I’m beyond proud of it. I don’t listen to it as much as I did, but I still listen to it a lot. I’m excited to get into some other songs to take on the road. It’s still fresh, we haven’t toured that much, we still have a few months off before we announce something.”

In an interview with Power Hour in July, not long after the release of their new album, he again expressed that he felt very good about ‘Life Is But a Dream…’ He said:

“This one gave us a pretty big body of water in between the previous chapters and this one to really appreciate that new perspective, and really feel and appreciate what we have right now that we’ve built.”

Gates Is Happy To Take A Different Approach Musically

Avenged Sevenfold attracted the attention of the public and the media as they produced rather experimental music on their new album.  Gates, explained why he chose this new sound and how the guitar riffs came about on the MetalSucks Podcast in June. He said:

“This is the most guitar-centric record, by far. It’s all fucking guitar and it’s all fucking crazy. But we really wanted to not just into a fucking bridge where get into some clean or fucking halftime shit or just bringing the chorus back in a different way. It was like ‘How do fuck do we make these soundscapes, these riffs, these things that will sound like Avenged, but how do we make them fresh? And how do you hear guitar like for the first time for the guys who have been playing guitar their whole lives? How do we have them hear it for the very first time with brand new ears or eyes?”

He then stated that he was fed up with old-school formulaic riffs. He said:

“I plugged into a fucking amp, I tried it a couple of times (and started playing) stale Metallica riffs, stale Avenged riffs, stale old Pantera riffs. Like, I was just done with it. The band was done. So we had to go somewhere else.”
