Sweet addressed the criticism directed at Jon Bon Jovi, expressing his frustration with the negativity and calling for more respect toward legendary artists.

“I’ve been reading a lot of comments on the first Bon Jovi show at MSG. There are quite a few negative comments (from fans) and I’m trying to understand/comprehend it,” Sweet said. “The guy (Jon Bon Jovi) is doing everything he can to stay in shape, retain his vocal abilities and be the best that he can be. Yet that just isn’t good enough for some people. Actually for a lot of people.”

Sweet then broadened his remarks to reflect on what he sees as a wider cultural problem. He drew from his own personal experiences as a musician.

“What has happened to our society? We live in an age where all we do is complain, belittle and disrespect people. Artists who are legendary. It’s becoming more and more difficult for me to understand,” he continued. “I face my own humiliation on-line and you really do need to have thick skin (as an artist/musician) living in this world today.”

He concluded his statement on a positive note, offering his full support to Bon Jovi.

“Anyway, enough ranting. I applaud Jon and I respect him for all that he’s doing. He’s a consummate professional and has written more hit songs and played to more people than any of the bullies talking smack about him daily on many outlets, online. Congratulations to Bon Jovi and here’s to many more years and many more shows,” Sweet said.

The comments came as Bon Jovi returned to the live stage at MSG following Jon Bon Jovi’s vocal surgery. The comeback carries significant weight given the severity of what the singer went through.

Jon Bon Jovi underwent vocal cord surgery in 2022 after being diagnosed with atrophied vocal cords. The procedure involved placing implants in his throat to push the cords closer together, allowing them to function more effectively during singing and speech.

The road to recovery proved to be far longer than anticipated. Jon Bon Jovi recently declared himself fully recovered, but acknowledged that the process took four years. He described the timeline as “longer than I’d ever expected, but it had to be right.”

The surgery sidelined the band from touring for an extended period. Returning to Madison Square Garden — one of the world’s most iconic venues — underscored the significance of the comeback.

Despite the mixed fan reaction online, Sweet’s defense of Jon Bon Jovi reflects a broader sentiment among fellow musicians. It speaks to the physical and emotional toll that vocal injuries can take on a performer’s career and identity.
