The Christians’ drummer Lionel Duke suffered a cardiac arrest while performing as a supporting act for Sting during a concert. An official statement was shared on Facebook confirming the incident.
The band released a statement expressing gratitude for the medical response and updating fans on Duke’s condition.
“Thank you so much to all the many many messages regarding our drummer Lionel Duke who suffered a cardiac arrest while performing at tonights amazing concert ahead of Sting,” the band stated.
The statement continued with details about Duke’s current status and medical care.
“We are awaiting news from the Heart and Chest hospital at Broad Green and thank the phenomenal team of medics present from On The Waterfront Liverpool team who stepped in so swiftly to help our poor Lionel,” they added. “Please send positive vibes his way.”
The incident has brought attention to both the immediate medical response and the band’s long history in the Liverpool music scene.
Hello Rayo reported that the cardiac arrest occurred during the performance of “Greenbank Drive,” just four songs into The Christians’ set. The medical emergency prompted frontman Garry Christian to immediately call for help and halt the performance. This swift response likely saved Duke’s life.
Wikipedia notes that Lionel Duke has been a key member of The Christians since at least 2009. He serves as the drummer for the band’s revived lineup alongside other core members. The Christians formed in Liverpool in 1985. They achieved significant success with their chart-topping debut album and have maintained an active touring schedule with various lineups over the decades.
Headliner Sting received The Christians’ blessing to continue with his scheduled performance following the medical emergency. Hello Rayo revealed that Sting later addressed the audience from the stage. He provided an update on Duke’s condition and showed solidarity with the support act.
“The drummer in the band before is OK. He’s in hospital. All of us are praying he’s going to be fine. Our thoughts are with him,” Sting told the crowd. He then dedicated his closing song “Fragile” to Lionel Duke.
The incident occurred during what was described as an otherwise successful evening at the On The Waterfront Liverpool event. It highlighted both the unpredictable nature of live performances and the importance of having medical professionals on standby at major concerts. Further updates on Duke’s condition are expected as he continues to receive treatment at the Heart and Chest hospital.
