Known for her performances with Machine Gun Kelly, Sophie Lloyd talked about the challenges she faced in her career during a recent interview with Classic Rock. The guitarist specifically addressed the backlash she received over her cover of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’
Although many of her fans enjoyed her take on the Nirvana hit, there were negative reactions to her cover, especially regarding her outfit in the YouTube video. In her latest interview, Lloyd responded to the hatred she received by stating:
“Stuff like ‘Oh, I was watching it on mute… Hey, that’s still a view for me; that’s still paying my bills! Everyone gets hate. I think a lot of people think, ‘Someone’s making her dress like that,’ but that’s how I like to do it; I’m really into that kind of fashion. There’s definitely a character element. That’s just what I’m into at the moment, and it’ll change as well – I’m sure it will go in waves.”
Sophie Faced Backlash Due To Rumors About Machine Gun Kelly Affair
This was not the first time Lloyd received negative reactions from fans. Last year, she was involved in the rumor that Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox broke up due to Kelly’s affair with his new guitarist. Sophie repeatedly denied having any romantic relationship with MGK.
In a July 2023 interview with Guitar World magazine, the young guitarist responded to the accusations against her and insisted that none of them were true. She also mentioned that the rumors came down to sexism. Lloyd further explained in the interview:
“Obviously, we all know the truth – it was complete bullshit – but it was wild to see this thing spread so fast and how everybody jumped on the bandwagon. What I found especially upsetting was, the second there was some sort of drama, fingers immediately pointed at me. It was like, ‘Oh, the girl musician – of course, she’s at the root of it. Nobody would have said shit if I were the new dude in the band; they wouldn’t have suspected a thing. It was a bit unfortunate to be exposed to the toxicity of the media.”
All the rumors and backlash don’t seem to affect negatively the young musician’s career. It’s known that following the MGK controversy, she actually gained thousands of more followers on her social media accounts. Last year, Sophie also released her debut album, ‘Imposter Syndrome,’ via Autumn Records.
