Slipknot’s Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan recently defended artificial intelligence technology and explained how musicians can use it to their advantage. He shared his perspective in an interview with Escapist Magazine.

Crahan addressed the widespread criticism of AI among musicians. He offered his contrasting viewpoint on the technology’s potential benefits.

“[AI is] a professor in my pocket who only wants to do what I ask it. I’m employing AI 190 percent. I’ve been using AI my whole life,” Crahan said.

The Slipknot percussionist elaborated on practical applications for musicians, particularly in the creative process.

“Here are my words. Don’t change them. Don’t alter them. But show me some different ways to sing it. What’s the difference between me pulling out my pocket producer… or me trying to get a famous producer that might not even work with me and could potentially cost me $150,000… who will only give me one or two ways – I’m not mentioning any names!” he continued.

Crahan’s embrace of AI technology extends beyond music production into other creative ventures. Chaoszine reported that he recently launched a custom Minecraft server called ‘Vernearth’ to pursue creative exploration. This venture is rooted in his lifelong gaming passion that began with early systems like Atari and Intellivision.

The musician maintains that human creativity remains essential despite AI assistance. Architeg Prints noted that Crahan emphasized the irreplaceable human element in his work. He stated “It’s still going to take me to sing it. And it will never be like it was.”

His comments about expensive producers may reference past industry experiences. Chaoszine suggested this could allude to tensions with producer Rick Rubin during Slipknot’s 2004 album Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses).

Crahan’s perspective positions AI as an empowering tool rather than a threat. He views it as technology that works only as directed by the user. His stance stands in contrast to many musicians who have criticized AI technology’s impact on the music industry. He offers a pragmatic approach to integrating artificial intelligence into creative workflows.
