Sid Vicious’ Twelve Point Defence For Staying With Nancy Spungen

4 Min Read

Drugs and alcohol may surely be destructive for one, but combined with love, it is almost impossible to escape the pit of addiction. Because the deeper one falls, the darker it gets until his vision is gone. The only thing he can do is to soothe himself with reassurances and possibly lies.

This is all metaphorical, of course, but it has a substance. The core of this matter lies at the center of a shattering love story from the punk scene—the dangerous and mysterious love story of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, which intoxicated them to death.

It is one of the most well-known incidents in the music industry, as it includes a murder mystery. One morning in 1978, Nancy Spungen was found dead in the bathroom of the hotel room she shared with her boyfriend, Sid. She was stabbed to death, and he was the one who found the body. So, the arrows immediately pointed at the young bassist. But was this the only reason for the suspicions? The answer is no.

Spungen and Vicious had a tumultuous relationship filled with drug abuse and violence. They were known to lock themselves in their room and do drugs for long periods of time. For that reason, people around them were unhappy with their association, and many admitted its adverse effects on Vicious’ circle of relations. The former bassist of Sex Pistol’s bandmate, Steve Jones, and Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister openly expressed their opinions on Nancy and their relationship before. Thus, it is an understatement to say that their relationship was not approved.

Nancy and Sid were affecting each other in a wrong way, and people around them were aware of it. But the warnings fell on deaf ears because they had no intention of breaking up. Just the opposite, Vicious was convincing himself more to keep loving Nancy. He held a note of the things that made her lovable and tried to justify his feelings for her.

The list held twelve points, some of which were explicit, and was written on a torn paper from a notebook. Vicious mentioned Nancy’s beauty in different forms with a few items, along with her wit and sense of humor, according to a text from Huffpost in 2012.

The complete list of Vicious read:

“‘What Makes Nancy So Great By Sidney’

1. Beautiful 2. Sexy 3. Beautiful figure 4. Great sense of humour 5. Makes extremely interesting conversation 6. Witty 7. Has beautiful eyes 8. Has fab taste in clothes 9. Has the most beautiful wet p***y in the world 10. Even has sexy feet 11. Is extremely smart 12. A great Hustler.”

No matter how much Sid Vicious’s relationship with Nancy Spungen hurt them, the late bassist refused to leave her. He justified his feelings for her and convinced himself to be with her despite the warnings and remarks from the people surrounding them. And his persistence led to his death following hers, which still remains an unsolved mystery. Love is both a wonder of life and a destructive force that can break you into pieces.
