In a new chat with Net Positive With Jon Crist, Scott Stapp admitted he was responsible for Creed’s split.

Creed was big in the ’90s and early 2000s but broke up in 2004. Then, they reunited in 2023. “I don’t think there was panic; I think there was some frustration and anger,” the frontman said of the breakup. “I think it was one of the handful of reasons that we ended up breaking up.”

He went on to talk about his role in the split, explaining, “I can own my part. I got mixed up in some things I shouldn’t have that I go to a program for today. That, I’m sure, was a major part, because had I not developed those issues. I think we probably could have worked through everything else. So, I’ll take the blame about that.”

Stapp’s drug and alcohol abuse, along with mental health issues, led to a psychotic break. During Creed’s peak, he struggled with depression and used substances to cope. In an interview with Stereogum last year, Stapp talked about how he stays sober on tour with Creed. When asked if it was hard to stay sober, he responded, “No, it’s not. I create my own world.”

The singer continued, “And I have my own, my entire situation laid out for me and a big 5,000-square-foot cabin. And I actually brought my sponsor out, just because he’s my friend. Not because I was concerned about having a drink. But my sponsor was there with me, and I had a couple of friends with me. And that’s what I do. I create my own environment, my own sober environment.”

“Drinking, at this point in my life, it’s not an option. That’s where I’m at. I wake up every day and have notes on my phone that remind me throughout the day, drinking is not an option. And I stay in touch with my sponsor and try to surround myself with other people trying to stay sober,” he added.

Creed will take the stage at Stagecoach Festival in April. Then, they will start their ‘Summer Of ’99’ tour on July 9 in Lexington, Kentucky.
