Sammy Hagar has responded after Alex Van Halen called him a “complete idiot” while discussing books written by former Van Halen members.
Hagar reacted directly under a RockCelebrities Instagram post about Alex’s comments and made it clear that he does not want to continue the feud.
“This comment and post is so unnecessary at this time in our lives, but I guess the truth hurts sometimes. Peace already.”
The response comes after Alex Van Halen was asked about David Lee Roth’s 1997 memoir Crazy From the Heat and Hagar’s 2011 book Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock.
Alex had positive words for Roth’s book.
“It’s quite fun and accurately reflects his sense of humor,” Alex said. “Although the text is somewhat abstract and loses its train of thought at times, it’s still a very interesting perspective on that era.”
His response to Hagar’s memoir was much harsher.
“I don’t know what he wrote, and I don’t wanna know,” Alex said. “In my opinion, Sammy Hagar is a complete idiot.”
Hagar’s new comment takes a different tone.
Instead of answering the insult with another personal attack, he described the exchange as unnecessary and called for peace.
The line about “the truth hurts sometimes” also suggests that Hagar is not backing away from things he has said publicly about his years in Van Halen.
The relationship between Hagar and Alex has been tense for years.
Hagar has previously said the two have not spoken in more than two decades, and he has criticized Alex’s attitude in recent interviews.
At one point, Hagar compared Alex to Roger Waters and described both men as negative people.
Tension also grew after Alex announced plans involving unfinished recordings by Eddie Van Halen.
Hagar and former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony were not included in that project, something Hagar later criticized as a missed chance for the surviving members to honor Eddie together.
Alex’s memoir *Brothers* has also brought old Van Halen relationships back into public discussion, especially because the book focuses heavily on his bond with Eddie.
His latest comments about Hagar showed that the tension between the former bandmates had not disappeared.
Hagar’s response now appears to be an attempt to stop another round of public attacks.
For now, he has chosen not to answer Alex with another insult.
His message was instead short and direct: at this stage of their lives, he believes the feud should end.
