Sammy Hagar is apparently not a Hagar.
Recent DNA tests revealed that the rocker had no genetic connection to the Hagar family and that his DNA matched 27 other men with the surname Belcher.
In a new post he shared on his X account, the rocker made a short explanation about finding out the truth about his family lineage, where he reassured his fans that it was nothing to worry about and it was nothing but just a name:
“Sammy Hagar here, also known as Mr. Belcher lately. Don’t freak out about this, this is no big deal. This is actually pretty cool because at least I know a little about my past. There’s nothing in the name; you are who you are, and maybe what you call yourself is even more important than what you’re really named.”
He Found More Than Just A Different Last Name

Hagar discovered secrets within his family lineage, but it was more than just his name.
The show’s thorough research led host Henry Louis Gates, Jr. to uncover that Hagar’s maternal great-grandfather, Giacomo Alessi, was a fruit dealer in New York. However, it was revealed that fruit dealing had more perilous implications than anticipated.
In 1899, Joseph Alessi, Hagar’s great-grandfather, was engaged in a shootout over $13, resulting in the death of the other party. As a consequence, Alessi was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
The Van Halen rocker’s response to these was:
“They’re mobsters!”
In addition to the newest information he learned about his family, learning his real last name did make him happy. He stated:
“I’m so happy to know this. This gives me so much mind-chewing — man, my mind’s gonna work on this like a mouse on a wheel of cheese.”
