Ross ‘The Boss’ Says He And Joey DeMaio Were The Lennon And McCartney Of Metal

Ross ‘The Boss’ Friedman sat down for a new chat with rob wog and talked about his years in Manowar as well as the records he created with his former bandmate, Joey DeMaio. The guitarist said:

“That record ‘Hail To England’ was — I mean, not that ‘Sign Of The Hammer,’ not that ‘Into Glory Ride’ was a piece of s**t. But that record really started to congeal, started to come together, of all of the Manowar ideas. ‘Cause that session, we recorded most of ‘Sign Of The Hammer’ as well.”

Between 1982 and 1988, Friedman and DeMaio worked closely together, producing six albums. Their productivity led them to be named the Lennon and McCartney of metal, as The Boss shared:

“Those are back in the days that we had plenty of songs, and it was never a problem. Between Joey and I, it was never a problem of songs. People would call us like the [John] Lennon and [Paul] McCartney of metal songwriting because we did six records in six years. Think of that. Now, how many have they [Manowar] done after that? 13 years between records.”

The Boss’ Departure From Manowar

The albums from this era, such as ‘Kings Of Metal,’ ‘Into Glory Ride,’ and ‘Hail To England,’ were well-received, contributing to Manowar’s growing popularity. But the band’s rising fame led to tensions between Friedman and DeMaio.

Once, the guitarist cited ‘ego, greed, avarice, and evil’ that came with fame as the reason behind his departure from the lineup in 1988. Discussing a possible return to Manowar in a 2021 interview with Waste Some Time With Jason Green, he explained:

“Well, if the financial arrangements were right. But [Joey is] the kind of scumbag that would never have that… I’ll never say no, but you never know. I just called him a scumbag, so… It’s not gonna happen. He’s secure in the fact that MANOWAR are mediocre f**king pieces of s**t right now. What they’re putting out to the public [is] just terrible.”

What Happened After The Guitarist Left?

After Friedman left Manowar, the band introduced new members like David Shankle and, later, Karl Logan. Their latest album, ‘The Lord Of Steel,’ came out in 2012.

Meanwhile, their former guitarist collaborated with different bands and also focused on his solo career. He has released four solo albums since 2008, with the most recent, ‘Born Of Fire,’ launched in 2020.
