During the UK leg of Roger Waters’ This Is Not a Drill tour, his touring member, Dave Kilminster, spoke to Guitar Interactive’s Jonathan Graham and opened up about the bassist’s wish to find someone like David Gilmour.
Recalling his audition experience with Waters, the musician said:
“So, I went for the audition and performed terribly. It was just hideous. I thought I was prepared, but I clearly wasn’t prepared because I didn’t know even about the history of music. They said they wanted someone to play and sing like David Gilmour.”
He further reflected on the audition process:
“So we were just about to play ‘Money,’ and I was feeling quite comfortable because I had all the three parts. So, I went to Roger and said, ‘What part would you want me to do? I can do the reggae or just fill in the bassline or do the thing with the drummer.'”
However, he received an unexpected question from Roger, as Kilminster revealed:
“He said, ‘I don’t mind. Are you alright on the lyrics?’ ‘I am supposed to sing this. Okay.’ The first time I sang it, Rogers stood there, and the lyrics were on the stand, and I was playing the reggae thing and trying to sing it, which isn’t difficult, but it is kind of nice if you go through it a couple of times just to get your head around it. So that was a bit of a disaster.”
Dave handles the guitar and backing vocals in Waters’ ongoing This Is Not a Drill tour. During his first tour with the bassist, The Dark Side of the Moon Live, and the following one, The Wall Live, Kilminster played similar parts to those performed by David Gilmour on the original studio albums. Roger’s farewell tour will continue with the South American dates, starting in October.
