Robert Plant recently explained his reluctance to perform Led Zeppelin’s most famous songs during his solo performances. He shared his perspective in an interview with Mojo.
The Led Zeppelin frontman addressed how he views the band’s iconic hits in relation to his current musical journey.
“What were the hits? How can they be related to now? Where do they fit? They fit as a sort of memoir,” Plant said. “When people say that I don’t like ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ I just don’t like the idea of it. These iconic things – they’re just what they are.”
Plant went on to highlight some of Led Zeppelin’s deeper catalog that he believes deserves more recognition.
“But you know, most people have missed some of the best Zeppelin stuff. ‘For Your Life’ on Presence. ‘Achilles Last Stand’! Fucking hell. Just extraordinary that three people and a singer can do that,” he continued. “Really, they were pulling so much stuff out of the unknown, Bonham and Jones together on For Your Life. It’s just insane. And Jimmy, just… (exhales).”
The singer reflected on the band’s core philosophy and their 2007 reunion performance.
“I suppose, to do it for the sake of it was never what Zeppelin was about. And the tribute to Ahmet, it came through. You know, without John, but it came through. It was a good study,” Plant said. “The smell of fear on that stage was quite remarkable. Because we’ve been shambolic at times, and great other times. That’s how it should be if you’re taking risks like that.”
Plant’s stance on performing Led Zeppelin material has been consistent throughout his decades-long solo career. He has made rare exceptions for special occasions.
Led Zep News reported that Plant surprised fans by performing “Stairway to Heaven” solo for the first time in over 16 years during a charity concert in October 2023. The performance required relearning the song with new musicians. It was described as more challenging than learning a new song due to unlearning years of prior interpretations.
This rare instance highlights the exceptional nature of Plant’s decision to revisit his past work only under meaningful circumstances. The charity performance demonstrated that Plant maintains his philosophical stance against routine performances of Zeppelin hits. He remains willing to make exceptions for causes close to his heart.
Plant has built a substantial solo career since the early 1980s. Wikipedia documented his extensive touring worldwide and his establishment of a musical identity beyond the Zeppelin legacy. His solo work has consistently focused on exploring new musical territories rather than relying on past glories.
The singer’s approach reflects a broader artistic philosophy that prioritizes creative evolution over commercial nostalgia. His commitment to moving forward musically has earned him respect as an artist who refuses to be defined solely by his most famous work. Fans continue to clamor for the classic hits that made Led Zeppelin legendary.
