Several musicians have opened up about The Smiths singer’s controversy, including Astley.
The pop singer revealed that he loved The Smiths ever since his childhood and that his big brother Mike introduced him to them. When asked about his thoughts on the frontman, he admitted to having been ignoring his statements and shortly replied with the following:
“I haven’t delved into things he’s said – I don’t feel that I want to, as I idolised him as a kid. I still have a quiff! Maybe I should own [the controversy around him] a bit more, but I’ve separated the art from the artist.”
The controversial opinions of the frontman don’t stop Astley from admiring his music. The pop singer shared his view that no one should cover the songs of the band, but in another universe, he would be in a Smiths pub covers band.
