Former Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora recently shared the remarkable story of how he reunited with his beloved 1976 Gibson Explorer guitar after it was stolen decades ago, as reported by People.

The musician explained how a chance call from Guitar Center led to an unexpected reunion with his iconic instrument. Sambora described the financial struggles the band faced early in their career and the emotional significance of recovering his prized guitar.

“The record company had to lend us money to buy new equipment and we just went and did it,” Sambora said. “About 10 years ago, I get a call from Guitar Center in New Jersey. I’m staying at my mom’s, and they go, ‘Your Explorer was in here. We just sold it to some guy.'”

The guitarist went on to describe how a fan recognized the instrument and purchased it specifically to return it to him.

“He sent me a picture and I go, ‘Get the f*ck out of here. You got it,'” he continued. “He goes, ‘I knew it was yours. I bought it immediately for you.’ So that was really, really cool of him.”

Sambora reflected on the guitar’s special significance in his musical career and its remarkable condition after decades of separation.

“I said to myself, ‘This is the guitar that I can make talk,'” he said. “When I wanted to be a badass, that’s what I took out. It easily was the best guitar I owned, and the specs were mine. So basically it was the first Richie Sambora custom model.”

“It was f*cking trippy as shit,” he added. “I put it on, I started to play it. It seemed like it was untouched. It’s almost in perfect shape.”

The story of Sambora’s guitar recovery highlights a broader issue that has plagued musicians for decades. Guitar theft has become an unfortunate reality in the music industry, affecting both emerging artists and established stars alike.

Mixdown Magazine documented how numerous famous guitars have been stolen over the years, with some never being recovered. The publication revealed how these instruments, often worth thousands of dollars and carrying immense sentimental value, disappear from venues, studios, and storage facilities.

The emotional impact of losing a cherished instrument extends far beyond its monetary value. Mental Floss reported that famous guitarists who have lost their instruments often describe the experience as losing a part of themselves, given the deep personal connection between musician and instrument.

Sambora’s case stands out because of the successful recovery after such an extended period. PRS Guitar Forums featured stories of musicians who have found their stolen guitars decades later. However, proving ownership after so many years often presents significant challenges.

The 1976 Gibson Explorer that Sambora recovered was particularly significant to his career, having been used on some of Bon Jovi’s most iconic tracks. The guitar’s distinctive sound helped define the band’s signature style during their rise to fame in the 1980s. This made its recovery all the more meaningful for both the musician and his fans.
