Nic Collins, son of legendary musician Phil Collins, recently revealed his ideal band lineup during an interview with The UK Drum Show.

Collins shared his carefully considered choices across all instruments when asked about assembling his dream band with musicians from past and present.

“That’s a good question,” Collins said. “I think on bass Justin Chancellor from Tool. I’m a huge Tool fan. So I think I would go with him ‘cuz I just love the way he plays bass. And I think he kind of does everything.”

Collins notably chose someone other than his famous father for his vocal selection.

“It’s tricky. For vocals, I’ll go with Chino Moreno from Deftones,” he continued. “So I’ll go Chino. On keyboards, I’d go Tony Banks, who I’ve been able to play with. And I’m a huge fan obviously of his playing and stuff so that’s not me being biased.”

Collins completed his lineup with a guitar legend.

“And then, on guitar, I’d go Jimmy Paige,” he said. “I was going through a couple but I think Jimmy Paige as a writer and as just like a riff maker he’s one of the best of all time. I mean there’s like four different guys per instrument that I could have picked but that’s just who I’m going with for the interview.”

Collins’ selections reflect his deep appreciation for musicians who have shaped modern rock and progressive metal across different generations.

Wikipedia reported that Justin Chancellor joined Tool in 1995, replacing original bassist Paul D’Amour and becoming a crucial part of the band’s evolution toward progressive metal. Chancellor’s innovative approach to bass playing has been widely recognized. Bass Asylum noted that his versatility often gives the impression that there are multiple bass players in the band due to his complex layering techniques.

The English bassist’s creative process extends beyond traditional studio settings. Bass Asylum revealed that Chancellor has developed an unconventional approach to composition, often creating music while walking his dogs. This highlights his innovative mindset that has contributed to Tool’s distinctive sound.

Chancellor’s influence on Tool’s musical direction has been substantial since joining the band nearly three decades ago. His technical proficiency and experimental approach have helped define the progressive metal genre. This makes him a natural choice for musicians like Nic Collins who appreciate both technical skill and creative innovation.

The interview showcased Collins’ diverse musical influences spanning from progressive rock to alternative metal. It demonstrates how younger musicians continue to draw inspiration from artists who have pushed the boundaries of their respective genres.
