Genesis drummer Nic Collins recently opened up on Instagram to express his insecurities about playing the band’s songs.
The current drummer joined the band in 2022 to fill his dad’s shoes after he lost feeling in his fingers due to a surgery he underwent for his upper neck in 2009. Though Phil waited to recover, the problems with his hands lasted, leading him to not being able to hold a drumstick.
Nic shared his old videos with Genesis and wrote about his insecurities. The drummer wrote in the description:
“I was going through some old videos and came across some drum cam footage from the Genesis ‘The Last Domino?’ Tour. So I thought I’d put together a quick edit along with some board audio.”
Collins made it clear that although he’s proud to be playing in such a band, he still gets negative thoughts:
“Going back over old live videos is always a weird thing for me. On the one hand, I’m proud of what I’ve done, but there’s always that feeling of ‘What could I have done better?’ or ‘How could I have played it differently?’ I approached ‘Cinema Show’ similarly to the way it was played on almost every tour from the mid-’80s onwards.”
He then turned the topic into responsibilities and added:
“At the end of the day, my responsibility was making sure the songs could sound the best they could while also making sure that the band was comfortable and playing what they were used to. But looking back, I think there are some bits from the ‘Seconds Out’ version that I would have liked to incorporate a bit more.”
He concluded by sharing his happiness and admiration both for the band and for his friend:
“But that being said, I was super happy with how all the songs turned out, and I’ll always cherish the memories I got to make with my old man and his bandmates. Also, a shoutout to my percussion brother DTale, playing these tunes with you as a blast.”
Nic earlier shared Phil’s disappointment for being forced to quit drums, stating that his father knew Nic wouldn’t be able to play the way he used to. He also clarified that he still loved seeing his son on stage with the bandmates of over 50 years.
