Taylor Swift’s title track from her new album, ‘The Tortured Poets Department,’ came out on April 19. The pop singer name-checked Patti Smith in the song’s chorus by singing:
“I laughed in your face and said, ‘You’re not Dylan Thomas, I’m not Patti Smith / This ain’t the Chelsea Hotel, we’rе modern idiots.’”
Smith reacted to the reference through an Instagram post. She shared an image of her reading Dylan Thomas’ ‘Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Dog’ and wrote:
“This is saying I was moved to be mentioned in the company of the great Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Thank you, Taylor.”
Smith Appreciates The Pop Artist

Patti Smith previously shared sympathy for Swift after her comments at 2019 MTV Video Music Awards went viral. The ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ singer called out the Trump administration to pass the Equality Act to protect LGBTQ+ rights.
Smith commented on her words in a New York Times interview:
“She’s a pop star who’s under tremendous scrutiny all the time, and one can’t imagine what that’s like. It’s unbelievable to not be able to go anywhere, do anything, have messy hair. And I’m sure that she’s trying to do something good. She’s not trying to do something bad. And if it influences some of her avid fans to open up their thoughts, what does it matter?”
