Floor Jansen recently chatted with Louder Sound and discussed how Alanis Morissette inspired her as a teenager and encouraged her to start a career as a musician.

Our early influences might shape our lives and careers, so it only seemed right for Jansen to form a musical career after listening to Alanis’ ‘You Oughta Know’ for the first time when she was only 13 and hearing the truth and genuineness Morissette carried in her voice was all Floor needed to get under the rocker’s spell.

The Nightwish singer then discussed how she recently reconnected with Alanis again while watching a documentary about highly-sensitive people. Morissette was also featured in the film, as she disclosed her experiences of being an overly-sensitive person in the music industry while trying to score a spot.

Jansen found the challenges the rocker faced relevant since the frontwoman also had difficulties trying to be present in the industry while dealing with her sensitivity. Their shared struggles brought Floor back to Alanis and her music, and she picked 1995’s ‘Jagged Little Pill’ among her favorite records.

The frontwoman on Morisette’s influence on her as a teenager:

“Like Annie Lennox, Alanis Morissette formed me and my interest in singing. I was about thirteen when I first heard ‘You Oughta Know.’ She has her heart on her tongue, and she always puts it right there as she means it; it’s very to the point.

The funny thing is now she’s been part of a little film about highly sensitive people [‘Sensitive: The Untold Story’]. She’s in there, talking about the combination of being a highly sensitive person and an artist, and of course, as an artist and a highly sensitive woman, I could really identify myself in her stories and reconnect with her at a much later age, in a sense. She came back into my life through that.”

So, it seemed that Alanis had Floor under her spell since she was 13, and after getting to see her in a recent documentary, Jansen reconnected with her childhood hero and realized they had similar challenges in their careers.
