Nick Johnston recently addressed fan reactions to his addition to Mastodon following Brent Hinds’ departure. He shared his thoughts in an interview with Guitar World.

The guitarist acknowledged the scrutiny he faces from fans. He discussed how he’s adapting to his role in the band.

“I know I’m being judged right now. There are people with their arms crossed, as if to say, ‘Lemme see about this guy!'” Johnston said. “I read comments saying, ‘You’ve got nothing on Brent’ and it’s like, ‘Okay, I’m doing my best here!'”

Johnston explained how he’s found his place within the band’s dynamic. He developed his approach to performing with them.

“I’m now at a point where I’m not worrying. I feel free,” he continued. “If I hear Bill [Kelliher] doing a pick slide or pinched harmonic, I’ll try to match or harmonize it. I might play around Brann [Dailor]’s vocals with a little lead underneath. Every show feels unique but the songs are always the way they should be.”

Johnston’s comments come during a significant transition period for the Atlanta-based metal band. They navigate their first major lineup change in decades.

Loudwire reported that Brent Hinds departed Mastodon after 25 years as a founding member who played guitar and provided vocals. Band members described the decision as mutual. Mastodon expressed pride in their shared history and excitement to continue into a new chapter while maintaining all 2025 touring plans despite the lineup change.

Guitar Player noted that Bill Kelliher, Mastodon’s other guitarist, reflected on the difficulty of the decision. He acknowledged that while Hinds could not be replaced, Johnston brings a fresh direction to the band. Kelliher emphasized the challenge of moving forward without such a longtime collaborator and creative partner.

The band had to act quickly to fill the gap left by Hinds’ departure. Louder Sound revealed that the group initially enlisted YouTuber Ben Eller to perform temporarily before Johnston became the official guitarist. This transition period allowed the band to maintain their touring commitments while searching for a permanent replacement.

“It was time. People grow apart,” Kelliher explained in a recent interview. He addressed the circumstances surrounding Hinds’ exit and the band’s decision to continue with new personnel.

These comments reflect Johnston’s journey in establishing himself as Mastodon’s new guitarist while navigating fan expectations amidst significant transitions within the band. The guitarist’s candid approach to addressing criticism demonstrates his commitment to honoring the band’s legacy while bringing his own musical perspective to their sound.
