Journey guitarist Neal Schon recently addressed speculation about vocalist Arnel Pineda’s status with the band. He clarified confusion from recent media reports in an interview with Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk.
The discussion arose after previous articles suggested tension within the band regarding Pineda’s commitment to touring. When asked directly about Pineda’s current state and whether he wanted to continue with the tour, Schon provided a detailed response.
“All I can say is media is the media. We did a Rolling Stone article before our first show on the first leg. Arnel went first and I went second. By the time got to me, I had a whole lot of answering to do. And that question was thrown at me and I was like, ‘What?’ A lot of I didn’t know about,” Schon said.
The guitarist emphasized Pineda’s current positive attitude and the band’s momentum.
“I mean Arnel seems very happy to me right now. He’s got his kids with him, he’s happy. We’re on tour and having a blast. He’s holding up very well. I think it helped the other guys sing a song or two here and there. Because it lengthen the set,” he continued.
Schon dismissed the speculation as clickbait. He pointed to the band’s decision to add 40 additional shows to their tour as evidence of their unity.
“But I don’t really know what to think. I look at it like it was clickbait. You can’t believe everything that you read. The fact that we already have, you know, we were gonna initially do these other 40 shows. It was planned to be done in 2027. And we said, well, we got great momentum going on right now and we’re having a great time. Let’s just do it this year, and everybody agreed. Let’s go,” Schon explained.
He also acknowledged that the band needed time to reconnect after an extended break.
“And so it’s been very positive and, you know, he’s been in a great frame of mind and all of us have kind of pulled it together, you know? Things were strained a bit. I think we had a lot of time off. When you’re together just long as a band and you take nine months off and nobody works, everybody goes, you know, like all over the place,” he said.
Schon’s comments come at a significant time for Journey. The band continues their extensive touring schedule amid major career milestones.
TourSetlist reported that Journey is currently in the midst of their “Final Frontier Tour” for 2026, which celebrates 50 years of their music. The tour began on February 28, 2026, at GIANT Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. It is planned to include over 60 shows across the United States and Canada through July 2026.
Pineda recently said about wanting to leave the band before the tour started, “Back in 2024, I said to [the band], ‘If you’re planning to do a farewell tour, you better tell me, because my issues and my personal problems are getting more intense, and I don’t know if I want to go with you.’ I said, ‘I want you to discuss the schedule with me.’ It is what it is now…. But then, I was really not happy with how they scheduled this tour. My body has changed. I can’t take the cold weather anymore.”
Recent tour coverage confirms that Pineda remains an integral part of Journey’s current lineup. The band’s official touring roster lists Neal Schon, Arnel Pineda, Jonathan Cain, Deen Castronovo, Jason Derlatka, and Todd Jensen. This indicates that despite online speculation, Pineda continues to be Journey’s lead vocalist for their major farewell tour.
The tour’s scope has been subject to ongoing adjustments. This may contribute to some of the confusion surrounding the band’s plans. Xfinity Mobile Arena noted that Journey extended The Final Frontier Tour in May 2026. Other sources suggest the tour runs through November 28, creating conflicting public information about the band’s schedule.
This scheduling uncertainty aligns with Schon’s comments about media confusion and the challenges of maintaining clear communication about the band’s plans. The guitarist’s emphasis on the band’s current positive momentum and their decision to accelerate their touring schedule from 2027 to 2026 demonstrates Journey’s commitment to capitalizing on their current chemistry and fan enthusiasm.
