John 5 recently opened up about the challenges of replacing legendary musicians. He specifically addressed his experience joining Mötley Crüe as Mick Mars’ replacement, in an interview with Louder Sound.

The guitarist discussed the recurring pattern of criticism he faces when joining established bands. He explained his approach to honoring the original musicians’ legacy.

“I’ve had this every time I’ve joined a band. With Marilyn Manson, it was, ‘He’s got platinum hair’ and with Rob Zombie, it was, ‘Oh, look, he doesn’t fit in…’ With Mötley Crüe, it was the same thing,” John 5 said. “But that’s OK, because people aren’t used to it, so it makes sense [for them to be confused]. It would be like if you went to McDonald’s, and all of a sudden the Golden Arches were a different colour. You’re like, ‘Hey, wait a minute…’ So, I can understand it. It’s how things are.”

John 5 emphasized his deep respect for the musicians he replaces. He also highlighted his commitment to preserving their musical legacy.

“I have such respect for the music and the artist, and the person that I’m stepping in for. Be it Eddie Van Halen, Mick Mars or anyone like that, I have such respect for them. I show respect by playing the songs just as they were written. I’m not trying to do my own thing,” he continued. “As long as you play the parts directly and do a good job at it, everything will be OK, because that’s what people want. They love these bands that they’ve seen their whole lives. I do only join musicians that I’ve loved most of my life as well. It makes it easier on me. It’s easier for the audience, too, because there have been a lot of people who joined certain bands, and were like, ‘Oh, I never really even listened to them before’, and that idea is just so foreign to me.”

John 5’s transition into Mötley Crüe represents one of the most significant lineup changes in the band’s four-decade history. This change marks the end of an era for the legendary rock outfit.

Blabbermouth reported that John 5 was confirmed as Mick Mars’ replacement in Mötley Crüe in 2022. This confirmation followed weeks of speculation after Mars was forced to retire from touring due to ongoing health issues. Mars had been battling Ankylosing Spondylitis, a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the spine and other joints. This condition ultimately led to his decision to step back from the rigorous demands of live performances.

The band’s remaining members have expressed enthusiasm about John 5’s addition to the lineup. Blabbermouth noted that drummer Tommy Lee praised the new guitarist’s impact on the band’s dynamic and energy levels.

“He’s such a talented guitar player that it literally just lit all of us up on fire,” Tommy Lee said about John 5’s contribution to Mötley Crüe.

The guitarist’s approach to replacing iconic musicians has been tested throughout his career. He has previously filled the shoes of other legendary players in high-profile bands. His philosophy of respecting the original material while bringing his own technical prowess has helped him navigate the challenging transition periods that come with joining established acts.

Despite the initial skepticism from fans, John 5’s commitment to honoring the legacy of the musicians he replaces has gradually won over audiences who initially questioned the lineup changes. His extensive experience with major rock acts and his deep appreciation for the music he performs have proven essential in maintaining the integrity of the bands’ classic sounds. He also brings fresh energy to their live performances.
