Mick Fleetwood’s Biggest Regret About Fleetwood Mac
Even though Fleetwood Mac hit the rock stage and became a milestone band for the genre, especially with their best-selling eleventh studio album ‘Rumours,’ which came out on February 4, 1977, the band wasn’t in the headlines only with their music. The media and most fans always sought and found more details about the relationships between Fleetwood Mac members Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and Mick Fleetwood.
Therefore, the love triangles, breakups, and secret affairs, which couldn’t remain like that because of the journalists’ extraordinary efforts to draw more readers, turned Fleetwood Mac into a soap opera. Every episode of this so-called series was more interesting than the previous one. Let’s take a closer look at these problematic relationships and what happened between the band members.
Fleetwood Mac Members’ Tumultuous Relationships
The beginning of these challenging times goes back to the lovers and musical duo Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham being Fleetwood Mac members in 1975. Although the musicians undoubtedly contributed a lot to their international fame and commercial success with their style and talent, Nicks and Buckingham ignited fire when they broke up a short time after they joined the band.
After the two artists ended their relationship, Nicks dated her bandmate Mick Fleetwood and The Eagles’ Don Henley. However, the drummer had already married model Jenny Boyd. Nicks regretted having an affair with a married man, but she couldn’t change the past and what people said about that. According to Mick Fleetwood, these love affairs didn’t only cause problems between one another but affected the band’s musical journey.
What Would Mick Fleetwood Change About The Band?
During one of his previous conversations with The Sound, Fleetwood Mac co-founder and drummer Mick Fleetwood confessed that they went through hard times in the late ’60s and early ’70s. The band was on the news not with their successful works but with romantic relationships between the band members. According to the musician, most people couldn’t focus on their talent and art, which was their mistake.
The drummer admitted that everyone wanted to know who was sleeping with who or whether there was a problem between the band members. Fleetwood’s biggest regret was being too open about their personal lives because of being too naive in a wild industry like music. The musician began to feel ashamed of overshadowing their success in creating and performing their works, and now they are on the media with these only.
Fleetwood shared his ideas, saying:
“There’s no doubt those were hard-lived days. For a while, within Fleetwood Mac, there were romances and that lifestyle, and the other stuff got forgotten, and we asked for that trouble. We were too open about who we were and what we were doing, probably very naive.
All anyone ever asked was, ‘Who is sleeping with who?’ or ‘Who is angry with who?’ You start to feel it’s a shame. Now they intelligently talk about what we did musically. That’s important to us. We never wanted to make fools of ourselves too many times.”
Unfortunately, the band’s name got involved in many scandals regarding their love lives, and it was too late for them to get rid of their reputation. Still, many of their fans were interested in their music and didn’t care about the gossip part of their journey, which was something Fleetwood always wanted.
