Stryper’s Michael Sweet recently issued a statement criticizing bands that publicly air their internal conflicts. Fans speculated he was referring to Journey’s ongoing drama, as shared on Facebook.

Sweet’s statement addressed the negative impact of public band disputes on both fan experience and band legacy.

“Just a quick thought on all the band drama that we all see online: First, we have our own drama. Things happen from time to time internally that people don’t need to know about. And sometimes things happen that go public because of someone posting things online that they probably should not be posting. It happens,” Sweet said. “So, I understand the difficulties of being in a band and the difficulties of dealing with people as well. What blows my mind, is the constant drama with certain bands. It definitely affects what the fans think and it definitely tarnishes the name/brand. Without question.”

The musician emphasized how public conflicts affect the fan experience and musical legacy.

“People still buy tickets and wanna go hear the songs and see the shows but the drama has a negative effect on the overall spirit and the legacy of the band,” he continued. “People want to escape reality and escape the world when they go to a show or when they listen to a song. They don’t want to be thinking about the negative story they read two hours before the show or two days prior to listening to a song or an album.”

Sweet called for more mature handling of band conflicts behind closed doors.

“You would think that some of these bands that continue to talk badly about one another would realize that it reflects badly on them. On the name, the brand. It’s not a good look, and that bad look will live on forever. Every time someone listens to a song they will think of the drama and of the horrible things that have been said and done. It’s a simple concept and one that doesn’t really need to be explained,” he said. “People need to get in a room and discuss things like adults and work things out and stop going online to present all their problems. That doesn’t solve anything. The only thing that will resolve the situation is a face-to-face and a heart, if they really want to do that. If you don’t, just go your separate ways and put an end to the madness.”

The statement concluded with Sweet clarifying his position on normal band member changes versus ongoing public drama.

“I don’t know, maybe I’m the only one that gets a little aggravated by all the things that I read about some of my favorite bands. Anyway, in a perfect world, this is what I would like to see. And to clarify, I’m not talking about when things don’t work out with a certain member or an individual. That’s not what I am referring to. That happens and most bands deal with it gracefully. I’m talking about constant drama with certain bands and then stepping on stage as if it doesn’t exist,” he concluded.

Sweet didn’t name specific bands. However, fans have connected his comments to Journey’s recent public disputes among band members despite their ongoing tour.

Sweet’s comments come at a time when Journey continues to face internal tensions that have become increasingly public. Ultimate Classic Rock reported that Neal Schon, Journey’s guitarist and co-founder, has expressed frustration over ongoing disputes with bandmate Jonathan Cain. These conflicts stem from business and financial disagreements.

The conflicts between Schon and Cain have extended beyond financial matters. Ultimate Classic Rock noted that Schon has also reportedly taken issue with Cain’s public support for Donald Trump, right-wing causes, and Evangelical Christianity. This adds a political dimension to their professional disagreements.

The two band members have engaged in years of legal battles over Journey’s finances. Schon described the situation as exhausting. In a Rolling Stone interview, Schon stated: “I hate all these attorneys. It’s so nuts. There’s just so much ongoing noise. And I just want some fucking peace, for real. I’m just really tired of all the legal [battles]. It’s meaningless to me. I don’t have any time for it.”

Despite their personal conflicts, Ultimate Classic Rock revealed that Schon and Cain have continued performing together in Journey. They maintain a professional separation during performances. Schon emphasized that the band prioritizes its tour schedule and keeps personal drama from affecting live shows. He noted that “The music we’ve created together is amazing” and that fans deserve to experience it.

The ongoing drama within Journey exemplifies exactly what Sweet was addressing in his statement about bands that continue to perform together while dealing with public conflicts. Ultimate Classic Rock confirmed that Journey’s farewell tour is expected to run through 2027. This means fans will continue to witness the band performing despite their well-documented internal struggles.
