Stryper frontman Michael Sweet recently addressed his approach to sharing opinions online and defended his comments about Mariah Carey. He spoke candidly about facing public criticism in an interview with Mix Tapes Podcast.

Sweet’s comments came in response to a question about his honest interactions on social media and how he handles controversial topics with grace and respect.

When asked about his recent Mariah Carey comments, Sweet acknowledged the challenges of expressing opinions publicly.

“The flip side of that coin is uh even if you try to handle it with respect people take it the wrong way,” Sweet said. “Whenever you have an opinion, you’re opening the door. To be, you know, hated on and ridiculed and all that stuff publicly. But I don’t care. That doesn’t stop me. I mean, I’ve always made a vow to myself to be myself.”

Sweet explained his motivation for defending the pop icon. He emphasized his passionate response to negative comments about Carey.

“Well, I mean, I read [something about Mariah Carey] and that’s the other thing. I post what I feel passionate about in the moment,” he continued. “I read something about Mariah Carey and all these comments and I’m just thinking, ‘Wow, who are these knuckleheads? She’s a freaking lover hater, right? An icon.’ She’s sold millions of albums. She’s got nothing to prove. To any of us.”

The controversy stems from Sweet’s earlier defense of Carey. He criticized people for disrespecting the legendary vocalist based on a single performance clip. Sweet had previously stated that despite Carey’s status as a vocal icon with gold and platinum achievements, people were quick to trash her for not performing at 100% in one instance.

Sweet’s willingness to speak out reflects his broader philosophy on artistic expression and supporting fellow musicians. This approach aligns with his recent creative endeavors that emphasize positivity and encouragement.

CCM Magazine reported that Sweet recently released his own worship project titled The Master Plan. He emphasized the importance of uplifting others through music. The album showcases Sweet’s commitment to creating music that inspires and encourages listeners during difficult times.

“The goal is to inspire and encourage and give people hope,” Sweet stated about his latest project. He added that he hopes his work can help listeners find encouragement and healing through song. This philosophy of supporting and uplifting others extends beyond his music into his public statements defending fellow artists like Carey.

The Stryper vocalist’s defense of Carey demonstrates his consistent approach to standing up for artists who face unfair criticism. Sweet’s comments highlight the broader issue of how social media enables harsh judgment of performers based on isolated moments rather than their overall contributions to music.

Sweet’s stance on maintaining authenticity despite potential backlash reflects the same principles he applies to his musical career. His recent worship album represents another facet of his artistic expression. It shows his commitment to creating meaningful content regardless of public opinion.
