Megadeth drummer Dirk Verbeuren recently opened up about Dave Mustaine’s decision to retire after the band’s final album and tour. He shared his thoughts on the announcement in an interview with ClassicRockHistory.com.
The drummer addressed his reaction to learning that Megadeth would be recording their final record before embarking on a farewell tour.
When asked about his thoughts when Dave revealed that they were recording Megadeth’s final record and then embarking on its tour, Verbeuren provided a candid response.
“Well, I was not completely shocked because I thought from the very beginning, when I started playing with the band, that one day, this would probably come to an end,” Verbeuren said. “I didn’t think it was gonna happen now, but when he told us, I was like, ‘Well, now it is. Maybe it’s the right time. If he feels that it’s the right time, then it probably is.’ I have to respect that it doesn’t really matter what I think.”
The drummer emphasized his respect for Mustaine’s decision and the reasoning behind it.
“He’s done this for so many years, and if he feels now is a good time to put a period at the end of the sentence, then I think that’s good,” he continued. “I would rather the band played at full capacity these next three years that we’re supposed to be on the road—and maybe more—rather than things kind of unraveling and not living up to what people expect, pay money for, and travel to see us, you know?”
Verbeuren also highlighted the consideration for fans and Mustaine’s health challenges as factors in the decision.
“A lot of this is out of respect for the fans, and that Dave has had a lot to deal with health-wise over the years,” he said. “He still does, even though he’s cancer-free; he still has some issues. And, I mean, he’s lived a hard life, you know, he’s lived a very hard-working life. I’m proud of him for knowing when it’s the right time. So that’s kind of my thoughts about it.”
The band is expected to continue touring for the next three years as part of their farewell run.
However, it’s important to note that these retirement claims appear to contradict recent official statements and activities from the band. Verbeuren’s comments about Megadeth’s end come at a time when the band remains actively touring and recording.
Verbeuren joined Megadeth in April 2016, replacing Chris Adler who was on hiatus. Since his arrival, he has been an integral part of the band’s lineup. He contributed to their 2016 album “Dystopia” and their most recent release “The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!” which came out on September 2, 2022, and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200. Mustaine has praised Verbeuren’s contributions to the band, calling him “family” and describing him as “the best drummer we’ve had since Gar Samuelson.”
The Megadeth frontman has indeed faced significant medical issues in recent years, as Verbeuren referenced regarding Mustaine’s health challenges. He underwent emergency spinal surgery in 2019 for a pinched nerve and spinal stenosis during a South American tour, though he recovered fully. Additionally, Mustaine was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2019, declared cancer-free in 2020, and underwent precautionary radiation therapy in 2023. Despite these health scares, Mustaine has consistently emphasized his resilience and commitment to continuing with Megadeth.
Mustaine has repeatedly dismissed retirement rumors in recent public statements, contrary to the retirement narrative presented in Verbeuren’s interview. In a February 2024 interview, he stated clearly, “I’m not retiring. Megadeth is not retiring,” and has reiterated this stance in 2025 interviews, calling retirement rumors “fake news.” The band’s current activities support this position, as they are actively engaged in their Crush the World Tour 2025-2026, with confirmed dates extending through October 2026. This includes headlining slots at major festivals like Download Festival in the UK and Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, California.
The discrepancy between Verbeuren’s comments about a farewell tour and the band’s official stance raises questions about the accuracy of the retirement claims. Megadeth’s official website continues to promote upcoming tour dates. No official announcement regarding a final album or farewell tour has been made through the band’s verified channels. This suggests that either the interview context may have been misunderstood or that there may be internal discussions that have not yet been publicly confirmed by the band’s leadership.
