In a new interview with Metal Journal, Cradle Of Filth frontman Dani Filth shared his thoughts on the debate about the use of artificial intelligence to create music. The rocker was asked whether he believes this new technology is helpful or risky.
“Everything has benefits. There’ll be disabled people that will benefit from the use of A.I. There’ll be historians and things that just do work for you that make it easy. But that’s not the point. The point is it’s soulless,” he explained. “And it’s gonna make the human race not only lazy… I mean, look at the way people are with music nowadays, with just having access to everything. There’s no soul searching, there’s no going to a record store and finding an album… There was something very spiritual about spending the time drifting from shop to shop looking [for an album you really wanted]. Now you just press a button. And I think you lose the capacity to enjoy things as much… I do think that discovering bands and growing with bands and having them shape your parts of your life is important too.”
The singer clarified that AI is a problem for artists, “So no, I think A.I. is sh*t. I think it is a danger. And I’m not talking about ‘Terminator’ robots and Skynet, although that could be a problem eventually, but I just think, for people’s spiritual growth, for the replacement of hard work of artists in whatever they do, whether it’s music, radio, TV, film, anything, I think it’s a bit of a problem.”
While Dani does think it would ruin the music world, he admitted that the band used AI for one of their artworks. Naturally, fans didn’t take it well. “We used AI on our part of our artwork on live bait and we got a lot of sh*t for it,” he explained in another chat. “At the time I didn’t see a problem with it but I do now because I’m doing a lot of research my girlfriend is a tattooist and they’ve had lots of debates about it. Initially, I thought it was wonderful I thought it was a great gateway tool for everything, but now I think it’s very dangerous. I look on Instagram when I do and then I go ‘Oh wait, that’s AI.’ I think it’s seriously going to impact everybody’s work.”
In other news, Cradle Of Filth dropped a new single titled ‘Malignant Perfection’ last month. The song is from the band’s upcoming album, expected to be released next spring through Napalm Records.
