Max Cavalera recently reflected on his career and family legacy. He shared insights in an exclusive interview featured on This Day in Metal.

When asked about the significance of creating music with his sons, Cavalera expressed deep satisfaction with how his family has embraced the metal lifestyle organically.

“It’s great. It’s amazing,” Cavalera said. “When they were born, I had this dream like, man, it would be so cool if I can play with them, you know? I thought I hope it happens. It was just like a wish because they grew up in this world. They were on tour with us when they were little. They were born in this life and, you know, the chances of them becoming doctors or lawyers are very slim.”

Cavalera emphasized how his children naturally developed their musical talents through exposure and collaboration rather than formal pressure.

“I love that they learn about it and it was organically and little by little I start jamming with them and they got really good,” he explained. “And now, I jam with both of them in both different bands and I work with my wife all the time and we keep everything in house. It’s like a real true metal family, you know, that loves what we do. I love working with a family and we have bunch of arguments as well, even like fist fights. But in the end of the day, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It’s been a blessing and sometimes just kind of like I had to pinch myself like you know big festivals there’s 50,000 people going nuts.”

Cavalera also addressed his future in the industry, noting that he feels secure knowing his legacy is in capable hands.

“I also feel relieved like hey I can quit right now and they’ll carry on for me, you know, if I wanted to,” he said. “Not that I want to. I don’t have any retirement plans. Not for the moment.”

This sentiment reflects decades of dedication to metal music and a carefully cultivated family dynasty. The Cavalera family represents one of metal’s most compelling multigenerational stories, with Max’s vision of keeping the music within the family now becoming a reality.

Max Cavalera was born on August 4, 1969, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, according to Louder Sound. He began his legendary career alongside his brother Igor. The two brothers would go on to form Sepultura, a band that brought Brazilian groove to heavy metal in the 1990s. This band became a world reference point for the genre and set the stage for everything that would follow in the Cavalera family’s musical journey.

Max’s sons, Zyon and Igor Amadeus, were born during his early years with Sepultura—Zyon in 1993 and Igor Amadeus in 1995. Max and his wife Gloria raised both boys largely on the road, as noted by Guitar World. Gloria also serves as his manager. This unconventional upbringing effectively groomed them in the metal music environment from a young age and proved instrumental in shaping their musical identities and commitment to the family’s legacy.

The family’s collaborative efforts intensified with the formation of Cavalera Conspiracy in 2007. This marked a significant moment in metal history. Revolver Magazine documented how this supergroup reunited Max with his brother Igor after a decade-long feud. Igor Amadeus played bass during recording and touring. The band’s creation symbolized not just a professional reconciliation, but a true family affair that blended personal relationships with artistic ambition.

Today, the Cavalera family continues to exemplify a multigenerational metal music legacy. His sons actively participate in his various projects, and his wife Gloria manages the collective career. Max has successfully created what he describes as a “heavy metal family” and tribe. This structure ensures that the Cavalera name and musical vision will continue to resonate in the metal community for years to come. It validates Max’s confidence that his legacy is secure regardless of when he decides to step back.
