Josh Freese recently announced his return to Nine Inch Nails following his departure from Foo Fighters. Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron offered his congratulations on the career move. The announcement was shared on Instagram.
Freese’s statement reflected on both his difficult decision to leave Nine Inch Nails in 2008 and his excitement about returning to the band.
“Leaving Nine Inch Nails at the end of 2008 was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” Freese said. “My wife and I were expecting our third child, and I knew I needed to step away from life on the road to be home with my family.”
The drummer emphasized the unique experience of performing with Nine Inch Nails during his previous tenure with the band.
“NIN was a band that left me walking off stage every single night thinking, ‘That was incredible. We absolutely crushed it,'” he continued. “And it wasn’t just a feeling, it was a certainty. That level of intensity, pride, and satisfaction after each show is something I’ve rarely experienced anywhere.”
Freese expressed his enthusiasm about rejoining Trent Reznor and the Nine Inch Nails touring lineup.
“Now, being back on tour with Trent and the crew—helping them do what they do best night after night—is something I’m incredibly excited about,” he said. “To be part of that energy again feels amazing.”
Matt Cameron responded to Freese’s announcement with a supportive message: “Congratulations Josh!!” Fellow drummer Matt Sorum also commented on the post, saying “Knew you’d land on your feet.”
Freese’s return to Nine Inch Nails marks a significant chapter in both his career and the band’s ongoing evolution. This highlights the complex dynamics of modern rock music lineups.
NIN Wiki documented that Freese first joined Nine Inch Nails in 2005. He stepped in during their Live: With Teeth tour and eventually became the official drummer after taking over from previous members during that period. His initial tenure with the band lasted until 2008, when family obligations led to his departure. The drummer’s return comes after a series of lineup changes that saw Ilan Rubin leave Nine Inch Nails to join Foo Fighters in 2025. Freese was dismissed from Foo Fighters later that same year.
Wikipedia reported that Freese currently lives in southern California with his wife and four children. He balances family life with his demanding career as one of rock’s most sought-after session drummers. His ability to maintain this balance while participating in high-intensity touring schedules demonstrates the evolution of his priorities since his original departure from Nine Inch Nails over a decade ago.
The band Freese is rejoining has achieved remarkable success and recognition in the music industry. Wikipedia noted that Nine Inch Nails has sold over 20 million records worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020. This underscores their lasting impact on the music scene. The band is also known for their elaborate live shows featuring complex special effects, thematic visual elements, and re-arranged setlists that often incorporate melodies or lyrics from various songs to create unique performances.
Freese’s return to this acclaimed lineup represents not just a career move, but a reunion with the artistic intensity that originally drew him to the band. His previous experience with Nine Inch Nails’ demanding performance standards and his maturity as both a musician and family man position him uniquely to contribute to the band’s continued success. He can now manage the personal responsibilities that once led to his departure.
