Creed guitarist Mark Tremonti sat down with Ultimate Guitar and talked about the hate that comes with fame.
Both before and after their reunion, the band has been receiving hate from some. However, this doesn’t seem to bother Tremonti. “After a while you just kind of realize if you want to be in a band where it got as big as Creed did, there’s gonna be people that love you, there’s gonna be people that hate you,” the guitarist explained, adding, “Look at all the biggest bands in the world, especially pop artists. If it becomes a household name, there’s gonna be people that hate on it. And you’ve gotta take the good with the bad.”
He also questioned one thing: “Would you rather sell tons of records and have people come at you or sell no records and have everybody love you?”
The band announced last year in June that they would be reuniting with a tour. Their comeback started when some footage became viral on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook in late 2022. Stapp pointed out in an interview that over the 12 years since their last concert, younger fans have discovered Creed’s music.
However, the frontman wasn’t expecting the reunion to be a hit among fans. “I had no expectations of it ever coming back as big as it has,” the singer said during another chat. “I mean, the last tour was sold out. We were doing 20-plus thousand a night. It was crazy. And I was grateful. There were moments, man, where my eyes were just watering with gratitude…”
He added, “Just because I know what it’s like to have it, and I know what it’s like to not. And so there’s a much greater appreciation and respect for everything and everyone around me. It takes a village.”
While most bands are done with touring for the year, Creed still has three more shows. The band’s next show is to take place in Durant, Oklahoma on December 28.
