Maria Brink Defends In This Moment Against ’Satanist’ Accusations

6 Min Read

Maria Brink of In This Moment recently addressed accusations labeling the band as ‘Satanists’ due to their use of ‘witchy imagery.’ Responding to a fan’s query about her beliefs and the band’s thematic choices, Brink offered an insight into her personal spirituality and the ethos behind their music. Brink explained that some may misinterpret his artistic expressions as satanic due to a lack of understanding, but that he is actually deeply spiritual. She said:

“You know, if you don’t really listen or pay attention to what things are and the meaning of the songs, maybe you would think that. But I’m actually a very spiritual person. I actually say a little prayer before I walk onstage every single night. If anyone looks at our CDs, the first “thank you” you’ll see is to God and the Universe and Love.”

Brink elaborated further on her personal belief system, stating that she finds God not only in traditional places like churches, but more in nature. She went on:

“I find God not always in a church, but I find God more in the forest and the quiet and in the serenity and everything around me. I believe in the exchange of energy around us, and that what you put your energy into and what you put out into the world and how you treat people is gonna come back to you, you know?”

Discussing her rituals, Brink explained that these practices are not satanic but rather means to focus her intentions, such as manifesting something in her life. She emphasized that these rituals are about connecting with the earth and nature. She continued:

“So I do have different rituals and things that help me focus in on something. If I’m trying to manifest something into my life, I may have little ritual things that I do or little stuff like that. I’m not Satanic, I’m not sacrificing anything… But I do believe in the earth, and I believe in nature, and I believe that everything’s connected — and that it can help us and empower us.”

Brink Revealed How In This Moment Changes Themes

A fairytale in Alice in Wonderland, to a desert gunslinger, to a black widow…  Well, Maria Brink and In This Moment are constantly changing their aesthetics. Her fans wonder if these changes are merely stylistic choices or if there is more to them. In response to another fan’s question about the band’s evolving visual themes, Maria Brink provided insights into their creative process. She said:

“We’re all just evolving in life, and we like to move into new energies and try new things and experiment in new places — and honestly surprise ourselves. We don’t wanna just stay in that one energy.”

Brink said that when changing themes, the process starts with the music and then they adjust layers such as music videos or live shows. She continued:

“But we always say it starts with the music: The first, most important thing is that the music has to make you feel something. Then you get to put on all these layers, like the music videos and the live show, and figure out how to bring it all to life so all the sense are being affected. I’m always writing a new idea or thinking up a new outfit or figuring out how we’re gonna bring that song to life visually.”

Maria Brink And Chris Howorth On Their New Album ‘Godmode’

Another visual theme, coming with a new album. And this time from a god perspective. Before the release of their new album ‘GODMODE,’ Maria Brink and Chris Howorth of In This Moment shared their thoughts on their new album in a September interview with Loudwire Nights. Especially Chris emphasized that the album channels a more organic form of angst and intensity while also talking about their single ‘The Purge.’ He stated:

“That intensity and angst (on ‘The Purge’), it’s not on every single song, but it’s definitely in the album as a whole. There was more organic angst and intensity—you know, we’re back with all these feelings and the album has that. And there’s more screaming than any album we put out since Blood.”

Although Brink didn’t comment much about their new album, she agreed with Chris by saying:

“It’s exciting. We tried new things.”
