Lucinda Williams recently opened up about her ongoing health struggles following a stroke she suffered in 2020. She shared candid details about the lasting physical and cognitive effects in an interview with WQCS.
The acclaimed singer-songwriter discussed how the stroke continues to impact her daily life and musical abilities. She offered a frank assessment of her current condition.
“I still struggle when I walk,” Williams said. “I can sing. I’m not playing guitar right now; that’s going to have to come later.”
She also addressed the cognitive challenges she faces as part of her recovery process.
“That kind of confusion and memory loss,” she continued. “I just try really hard to focus and pay attention. I’m fine when I go onstage. I know what I’m supposed to do.”
Williams has channeled her experiences into her latest work despite these ongoing challenges. She released a collection of protest songs called “World’s Gone Wrong” that reflects America’s current period of struggle.
Williams’ health crisis began in 2020, just months after releasing her album “Good Souls Better Angels.” Paste Magazine reported that she suffered a blood clot on the right hemisphere of her brain that partially paralyzed her left side.
The recovery process proved to be lengthy and challenging. Garden & Gun detailed that Williams spent nearly five months in a wheelchair. She underwent daily physical therapy with strengthening and stretching exercises before gradually progressing to a walker and eventually a cane.
Her performances have also required significant adjustments to accommodate her physical limitations. Guitar Player noted that her tour manager now helps her navigate the stage, where she often grips the mic stand for balance during performances.
The stroke’s impact extends beyond physical challenges. It affects her ability to play guitar, an instrument central to her songwriting process. Parade highlighted that while her vocal abilities remain intact, her guitar playing has been significantly affected. This forced her to adapt her creative approach for her latest album.
Williams continues to tour and create music despite these setbacks. She demonstrates remarkable resilience in her artistic journey. Her latest work serves as both a personal testament to her recovery and a broader commentary on contemporary social issues.
