Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe recently opened up about the painful reason behind his decision to cut his iconic dreadlocks in 2023. He shared his experience in an interview with Louder Sound.
The metal vocalist explained that physical discomfort ultimately forced him to make the difficult decision to part with his signature look.
When asked what made him decide to cut his hair, Blythe revealed the practical challenges he faced.
“Pain. We played the Milwaukee Metal Fest a couple of summers ago, and after the show I couldn’t move my neck,” Blythe said. “My hair was well past my butt.”
The vocalist described the moment he realized something had to change for his physical well-being.
“I love my hair, but I thought, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’ I went to the bathroom, cut it off myself, and immediately my neck felt better, and it has ever since,” he continued.
Beyond the stage-related issues, Blythe also mentioned how his long hair interfered with his surfing activities.
“And also long hair gets in your way when you’re surfing. You’re on your stomach paddling and you have to pop up, and my hair would get caught under my hands, and suddenly you’re eating shit: ‘OK, I’m eating shit and I hurt. This is getting in the way.’ Have I kept the dreadlocks? Oh yes,” he added.
The decision marked the end of an era for the longtime metal frontman. He confirmed he has preserved his cut dreadlocks.
Blythe’s transformation represents the conclusion of a significant chapter in his appearance that spanned nearly a decade. Music Times reported that the Lamb of God frontman had maintained his dreadlocks for nearly ten years before making the drastic change in 2023.
The origin of Blythe’s distinctive hairstyle was as organic as his decision to remove it. Ketagalan Media documented that his dreadlocks began forming naturally around 2014 when he simply stopped combing his hair. His surfing lifestyle played a crucial role in this transformation, as he explained in a 2018 interview: “I surf all the time, so it just started getting tangled and I got tired of trying to brush it out.” The constant exposure to seawater also gave his dreads their distinctive blonde appearance through natural bleaching.
The public debut of Blythe’s dramatic new look came as a surprise to fans and the metal community. Loudwire noted that he revealed his freshly shaved head during Lamb of God’s performance on July 12, 2023, at the Festival d’été de Québec. The sudden change shocked audiences who had grown accustomed to seeing the frontman’s iconic dreadlocks swinging during the band’s intense live performances.
The transformation highlights how even the most recognizable aspects of a musician’s image can evolve when practical concerns take precedence. Blythe’s decision demonstrates that sometimes personal comfort and health must come before maintaining a signature look. This holds true even for a look that had become synonymous with his identity as a metal vocalist for nearly a decade.
