The Lemonheads frontman Evan Dando recently shared revelations about Kurt Cobain’s final days. He addressed allegations involving Courtney Love in an interview with NME.
Dando’s comments came in response to questions about claims that Courtney Love told Kurt Cobain she was having an affair with Dando to make him jealous.
Dando responded with a deeply personal reflection when asked about the allegation that Courtney Love told Kurt Cobain she was having an affair with him to make Cobain jealous.
“My first spiritual experience was when Kurt died [in 1994], because I felt that he knew the truth – because he went to his death not knowing,” Dando said. “[Nirvana’s] Pat Smear told me Kurt really thought I was having an affair with Courtney.”
Dando also revealed disturbing comments allegedly made by Love about their newfound wealth from the grunge movement.
“I hope I’m balanced in the book about her, but I couldn’t help saying that the first thing she said to me when grunge broke and everybody had money was: ‘Evan, this is great! We can put hits out on people now!'” he continued.
The Lemonheads frontman reflected on his complex relationship with the late Nirvana leader. He described an unusual connection between them.
“I felt that Kurt knew the truth a lot after he died. ‘Cause me and him had this weird barrier. We were doppelgängers in a way,” Dando explained. “People who worked with us both said they couldn’t even tell who was onstage. We listened to a lot of the same music and even his singing – I think that early on, he heard our early stuff.”
“This sounds like a podcast and it’s so boring and who-gives-a-shit, but we could have been friends and it’s a bummer. And I think we are friends now ’cause he knows the truth,” he added. “One thing Courtney always used to say was that he said his prayers every night.”
The relationship between Dando and Cobain has been a subject of speculation for decades. Various accounts have emerged about their limited interactions and the role Courtney Love played in keeping them apart.
Dando has consistently denied any romantic involvement with Love throughout the years. Clash Magazine reported that Dando stated, “Courtney was saying that we were having an affair – I was never attracted to Courtney.” This denial contradicts the narrative that Love allegedly used to create jealousy in her relationship with Cobain.
The two musicians had minimal direct contact despite their mutual respect and similar musical influences. Songfacts documented that Dando noted Kurt “was a good guy” but they “never really hooked up” due to Courtney, despite once visiting Nirvana’s rehearsal and having a good time. This limited interaction makes the alleged affair claims even more puzzling.
Love’s interference largely caused the strained dynamic between the two grunge icons. The Telegraph revealed that Dando described their “famously strained relationship,” fueled by Love getting “right between us,” preventing them from knowing each other better despite mutual admiration. This interference created an artificial barrier between two musicians who shared similar artistic sensibilities.
The tragedy of their relationship lies in what could have been. Both Dando and Cobain were prominent figures in the early 1990s alternative rock scene. The Lemonheads followed Nirvana’s path from underground success to mainstream recognition. Their similar musical backgrounds and shared influences suggest they could have formed a meaningful friendship had circumstances been different.
