In a recent conversation with American Songwriter, actress Kate Hudson unveiled the origins of her music career, suggesting a potential inclination towards rock music.

Hudson, who recently launched her debut single, ‘Talk About Love,’ discussed the role of Van Halen in shaping her musical journey during the interview.

Asked how her relationship with music started, Hudson revealed that a few iconic rockers helped her build an interest in music, eventually growing into a career. She explained:

“I had this little Fisher Price record player and I had 45s and I would listen to the Pointer Sisters over and over. There was one song called ‘Jump’ and I would listen to it over and over again. And I had a Madonna track and a Van Halen track. But Madonna, I was in that era of young, young girls, so she was my Taylor Swift. I remember listening to her music and being like this is my future.”

She then further explained how she had an exercise that helped her to improve, which also included other iconic rock singers:

“I’d rewrite other people’s songs. So I would listen to a song. I’d listen to a Bob Dylan song, and I’d write my own lyrics over Bob Dylan’s songs or Neil Young’s song. But it was an exercise for me, like what would my words sound like to this music that I love so much if it was my young mind.”

Kurt Russell, Too, Is A Rock Fan

Russell looked after Hudson since she was a child after she had been estranged from her biological father, Bill Hudson, for several decades. As a result, their relationship turned into a father-daughter closure.

Russell, as Hudson says, has a fondness for the energetic blues-rock group hailing from Texas known as ZZ Top. Even though there wasn’t an abundance of music in Hudson’s household, she mentioned the presence of classical music, and she noted that Kurt enjoys some rock music, particularly ZZ Top:

“Kurt loves a little rock music. He loves ZZ Top.”
