John Mayer recently chatted with Andy Cohen and shared why Ed Sheeran opened for him last month.
Mayer had previously opened up for Sheeran on June 30 at the Gillette Stadium in Boston. Then, that show was followed by Sheeran opening for John on September 19 at the Wiltern Theatre in LA.
So, when fans wondered what the story behind these shows was, Mayer decided to share and said:
“Ed’s opener, Khalid, couldn’t make a couple of shows and Ed reached out to me and said, ‘I need an opener in Boston. Will you do it? I know it’s a crazy ask.’ and I said, ‘You know what? I will do it.’ Because I thought it was so interesting and adventurous. So, I opened for him at Gillette Stadium to a half-full stadium. I loved it.”
He continued by recalling what made opening for Sheeran ‘special’ for him:
“I loved walking up to a stage where not everyone was on my side, and loved turning them on my side. I mean, that’s how we started [our careers]. You go up into a room full of people and use the music to make them get you here.”
The rocker then explained how the British singer wanted to return the favor:
“Then, Ed said to me one night, ‘I want to open for you one night. Let’s do a show. Maybe, we can do a show in LA in September.’ I go, ‘That sounds great.’ It was his sweetness in wanting to return the favor… Ed loves [having] adventure and fun in his life. It really inspired me to have more in my life. So, he opened for me in September and I’d say they [the shows] are both equally fun.”
