Mötley Crüe guitarist John 5 recently addressed fan criticism regarding the band’s continuation after Mick Mars’ departure and their previous touring decisions. He shared his perspective in an interview with Louder Sound.

John 5’s comments came in response to questions about the band’s credibility following Mars’ exit and their 2014 “Cessation Of Touring” contract.

When asked about Nikki Sixx’s previous statement that “Mötley Crüe is like a fist. If anyone ever left, the band would break up” and the touring contract that some fans feel undermines the band’s credibility, John 5 defended both Mars and the band.

“Here’s the thing. How many bands from the eighties are all-original members any more? You know, Mick gave that band forty years,” John 5 said.

He emphasized that fans should appreciate Mars’ contributions rather than criticize the situation.

“I don’t understand why people are so angry [about him leaving, and the subsequent legalities],” he continued. “We should be applauding him for what he has done.”

John 5’s statement highlights his belief that fans should celebrate both Mick Mars’ four-decade contribution to the band and Mötley Crüe’s continued work.

John 5’s defense of the band comes amid a complex legal battle that has recently concluded in Mötley Crüe’s favor. This provides context to the guitarist’s call for understanding and respect.

Guitar World reported that an arbitrator ruled entirely in Mötley Crüe’s favor against Mick Mars in December 2025. The ruling confirmed the band’s right to terminate him as a business partner and ordered him to repay over $750,000 in unrecouped tour advances. The ruling rejected Mars’ claims to 25% of future touring profits and upheld a 2008 band agreement that Mars himself helped write. This agreement states that members who stop touring forfeit their touring revenue shares.

The legal dispute centered around Mars’ departure from touring due to his Ankylosing Spondylitis, a chronic inflammatory condition that rendered him unable to continue performing live. Miller Barondess noted that the band terminated Mars “for cause” as officer and director. The arbitrator upheld this decision while tying it to his non-performance under the touring clause. Mars had received a $1,500,000 advance for 138 shows but stopped touring in September 2021. This led to the pro-rated repayment order for missed performances.

The 2008 amendment that proved crucial in the case was ironically demanded by Mars himself. It explicitly bars revenue sharing for any member who ceases touring. This contractual provision protected the band’s ability to continue touring with John 5 as Mars’ replacement while rejecting the former guitarist’s claim to perpetual revenue sharing. The arbitrator’s decision was finalized in a January 2026 hearing. It vindicated the band on all counts and even addressed false miming allegations that Mars later recanted under oath.

John 5 stepped into Mars’ role following the 2021 touring cessation. This enabled Mötley Crüe to continue their live performances without interruption. His recent comments advocating for respect toward Mars demonstrate his understanding of both the legal complexities and the human element behind the band’s transition. He emphasizes Mars’ four decades of contribution while supporting the band’s right to continue their legacy.
