Joe Perry Shares Courtney Love’s Revelation After Kurt Cobain Had Left The Room

Decades before Aerosmith decided to say goodbye to its fans with a farewell tour, the band members got to have a chat with the late Kurt Cobain. According to Joe Perry’s recent interview with Classic Rock, Courtney Love revealed something about Cobain to the band during this interaction.

Talking about the day the former Nirvana vocalist visited them as a fan in their dressing room, the guitarist said:

“He was pretty quiet. He just wanted to hang out. He came in the dressing room with Courtney [Love] and kind of just sat around with us. He was a normal guy. When he went off to the bathroom, Courtney – who was very verbal – said: ‘He loves you guys. He doesn’t like anybody, but he loves you guys.’ I had nothing but respect for the guy. He was an amazing songwriter and performer, and to hear that was great.”

During the interview, Perry also challenged the idea of new musicians’ not liking the older ones. He said this was an idea created by record companies, not the bands, and mentioned the time he went to a Foo Fighters concert and was invited to their warm-up room.

His words about the band read:

“They have all the instruments set up so they can go in and jam, and they knew every Aerosmith song cold. I couldn’t believe it; I was embarrassed. They were playing songs that I hadn’t played in thirty years. There was no bullshit, they were fans, but being able to play some of those songs and know those riffs off the top of their heads, it was like: ‘Holy sh-t!'”

On the other hand, Cobain’s connection with Aerosmith didn’t stop after the backstage meeting. In 1992, when Steven Tyler heard about the late singer’s drug problem, he tried to help and called Nirvana’s management to ask for his phone number.

Janet Billig from Gold Mountain Entertainment remembered this moment in the book ‘Everybody Loves Our Town’ as follows:

“Right when It started coming out that Kurt was doing drugs, I remember Steven Tyler called and wanted to help. I told Kurt, Holy shit, Steven Tyler called my office, and he wants to help you. Can I give him your number?’ And he was like, ‘Steven Tyler got to be a junkie for 18 fuckin’ years. I’ve only been doing drugs for an hour.'”

Sadly, by the time Tyler and Cobain finally talked about drugs and how to quit, it was too late. Shortly after leaving the rehab center that he accepted to enter after an intervention, the singer was found dead at his home on Lake Washington Boulevard in April 1994.
