Joe Elliott Reflects On Def Leppard Replacing The Rolling Stones
During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott stated that they need to earn the right to replace the Rolling Stones to fill in the big stadiums when they stopped touring soon.
The Rolling Stones will be hitting the road for a European tour this year to celebrate their 60th anniversary. The tour is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2022, in Madrid, Spain, and end on July 31, 2022, in Solna, Sweden. As one of the definitive acts of the rock scene, the Rolling Stones concerts are among the most-awaited shows for their millions of fans.
They have performed over two thousand concerts worldwide since their formation in 1962. It is unknown how long they will continue touring, but it will probably not take much longer considering their age. During the interview, Joe Elliott was asked whether Def Leppard could fill their shoes in big stadiums when the Stones stopped touring.
The singer expressed that they would undoubtedly have an opportunity for that, which is actually up to their performance. They can’t just wait for people to come and see them instead of the Stones. They need to keep producing new material to become entitled to replace the Stones to perform in big stadiums filled with thousands of people. Elliott stated that they need to work meticulously on every album with the total effort to have the opportunity to fill in the stadiums.
Joe Elliott said about replacing the Rolling Stones the following:
“I would like to think we’d get an opportunity to do it. It’s totally up to us. We can’t just expect to be planted on a stage and think, ‘Well, the Rolling Stones aren’t here anymore, so we everybody that is a Stones fan will just see us now.’ It doesn’t work like that. We have to earn the right to step into the shoes of the Stones, the Who, McCartney.
Even people more of our generation like U2 or Depeche Mode… and there’s Aerosmith and AC/DC that are kind of in between us and those guys age-wise. There are opportunities to do this. It’s not going to happen if we just sit around pushing the back catalog for forever and a day. We have to keep creating, I think, to be able to do it.
And we have to be able to make sure what we do create doesn’t embarrass the back catalog since it has to stand up to it. That’s why we aren’t going to do an album every year. We’re going to cherry-pick what we do. We’re going to put our full weight behind everything we do. And we’re not going to put it out until we’re 100 percent that it’s ready to be heard. I think we’ve done that with this record. That’s going to give us an opportunity to stay in stadiums.”
Joe Elliott also stressed that he thinks they put their total weight into their upcoming album, ‘Diamond Star Halos,’ which will arrive on May 27, 2022. It will be the band’s twelfth studio album. The band released the new album’s lead single, ‘Kick,’ on March 17, 2022.
