Jerry Cantrell recently shared a remarkable story about Eddie Van Halen’s generosity on Gibson TV. The Alice in Chains guitarist described how Van Halen went to extraordinary lengths to support a fellow musician he admired.
During a tour together, Cantrell expressed interest in one of Van Halen’s custom Music Man guitars. Rather than negotiate a price, Van Halen offered something far more generous.
“On that tour he had the 5150 heads, the pies that he had kind of made and he had the music man guitars, the EVH music bands, which he had just kind of designed. And I was like, ‘Man, I’d really like to have one of those. Do you think you give me a good price on one of those?’ He’s like, ‘F*ck that dude, I’ll just give you a guitar.’ He’s like, ‘Everybody gives me everything for free now when I can totally afford it. When I couldn’t afford it, nobody would give me anything. So, let me do that for you,'” Cantrell recalled.
What followed was even more astonishing. Upon returning home, Cantrell discovered that Van Halen had filled his manager’s entire garage with equipment.
“I remember coming home off that tour and I was living with Kelly Curtis and his wife Peggy and I was living down in the basement. Not sure if Eddie Vedder was there with me yet. We were both living in the basement of our manager. Kelly comes out and he’s like, ‘Welcome home, man. By the way you think you could clear your sh*t out of my garage I need to put my car in there. Eddie Van Halen filled the garage with gear for you. I haven’t been able to park my car on my garage for months.’ I’m like, ‘What?'” Cantrell said.
The contents of the garage were staggering in scope. “He hits the clicker and it goes up and it’s just like a scene from a movie. Like the whole thing is filled with like cardboard boxes. Two full stacks, you know, so four cabs, two heads, couple of guitars, and it’s in a tiny packed garage anyway. So, it’s like just sitting there in the middle and I’m just trying to process this like, okay, Eddie Van Halen just filled my garage with gear,” he continued.
