Jeff Lynne’s ELO faced significant backlash from fans after canceling their scheduled performance at Co-Op Live just minutes before showtime due to illness. The announcement was made on X (formerly Twitter).

The band issued an official statement explaining the last-minute cancellation and expressing the artist’s disappointment.

“Unfortunately, due to illness, tonight’s scheduled performance of Jeff Lynne’s ELO at the Co-Op Live will not be going ahead,” the announcement read. “Jeff is devastated that he cannot perform this evening. More information will become available as soon as possible.”

Fans expressed frustration over the timing of the cancellation. Many had already arrived at the venue and made significant travel arrangements.

“Hope Jeff is okay, but an absolute disgrace waiting until an hour left to cancel on us,” one fan commented. “Some of us travelled for hours.”

Another fan criticized the handling of the situation. They wrote: “Shouldn’t let fans get seated, buy merch, then announce the shows cancelled. People flew miles, booked hotels- the lot! Badly handled.”

The disappointment was particularly acute for international attendees who had made extensive travel plans.

“I feel like I’ve been deliberately scammed,” another fan said. “They’ve spent 24 hours thinking about how to act so they wouldn’t have to return the money. The damage caused is enormous, with people coming from the USA, South Africa, all over Europe… like me. Disappointing behavior.”

The cancellation comes amid mounting challenges for the legendary musician during what has been billed as his farewell tour.

AXS TV reported that this cancellation marked the penultimate show in the band’s “Over and Out” farewell tour. The tour has been fraught with difficulties throughout its run. The 77-year-old Lynne had already been struggling with his health during the tour. This included performing with a broken left hand caused by a taxi accident just days prior to the Manchester show.

AXS TV noted that the injury prevented Lynne from playing guitar during recent performances. This forced him to rely solely on vocals while his band carried the instrumental duties. Observers at previous shows noted the musician’s visible fatigue and need for assistance on stage. Some performances ended without him taking his customary bow to the audience.

The timing of the cancellation has raised concerns about the remaining dates on the farewell tour. Hello Rayo revealed that the Manchester show was one of the final performances scheduled before the tour’s conclusion. This made the last-minute cancellation particularly disappointing for fans who viewed it as potentially their final opportunity to see the iconic musician perform live.

The “Over and Out” tour was intended to serve as Lynne’s final series of live performances. It marks the end of a career that has spanned more than five decades. AXS TV highlighted that the tour’s challenges have demonstrated the physical demands of live performance on the aging rock legend. He has been a central figure in popular music since the early 1970s with the Electric Light Orchestra.

The band has indicated that more information regarding rescheduling or refunds will be provided as soon as possible.
