Dream Theater frontman James LaBrie recently discussed the band’s future plans and approach to creating new music. He shared insights about their upcoming break and timeline for their next album in an interview with Igor Miranda.
LaBrie explained the band’s creative process and how they approach developing new material together.
“Whenever we approach a new album, it’s where we feel that we’re all presently sitting in life, what is affecting us, what is inspiring us, and most importantly, what do we feel should be the next chapter in Dream Theater as far as another album, its music, what is it going to represent, and something we can stand behind 100%,” LaBrie said.
He elaborated on how the band transitions into the creative phase and collaborates on new ideas.
“So we usually slowly transition to that when we know that we’re gonna go into the studio, when we know we’re gonna be writing a new album,” he continued. “That’s when we start having the conversations as, ‘Hey, what do you guys think about maybe this kind of an album or…?’ And then at the same time, even regardless of all the conversations we have, each guy will come in with seeds of ideas, and we throw that on the floor. ‘Here we go, man.’ It’s there. Which do we feel is something that’s really cool and something that we can build on, something that we feel is going in the direction that we’ve been discussing? And so it’s kind of like that.”
LaBrie also outlined the band’s timeline for their upcoming break and future recording plans.
“Right now the focus is we’re on this world tour,” he said. “We’re gonna be on the world tour until — what? — mid-May. And that’s the focus. Then we’re gonna take a break for a little bit. And then probably late ’26 or early ’27 we’ll get in to start writing and recording a new album. And then hopefully late ’27 or early ’28 we’ll go back out with a new tour. And this is just — this is all not concrete. But this seems to be the idea at this point.”
The comments address questions about whether the band has begun discussing the follow-up to their 2025 album ‘Parasomnia’.
LaBrie’s remarks come as Dream Theater continues their extensive world tour supporting their latest release. The band is currently performing their “An Evening With Dream Theater” tour. This tour showcases both new and classic material in an immersive concert experience.
Wikipedia reports that Parasomnia is Dream Theater’s sixteenth studio album, released on February 7, 2025. The album marks a significant milestone for the band as it features the return of original drummer Mike Portnoy. This makes it his first studio recording with Dream Theater since 2009’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings. The 71-minute album contains eight songs, with six tracks exceeding seven minutes in length. It culminates in the nearly 20-minute epic “The Shadow Man Incident.”
The current world tour represents a comprehensive celebration of the band’s catalog. Chaoszine noted that the tour features performances of Parasomnia in its entirety. It also includes the complete seven-movement masterpiece “A Change Of Seasons,” which is being performed in full for the first time since Portnoy’s return to the band. The setlist also includes classic tracks and fan favorites, creating an extensive evening of progressive metal music.
The band is currently in the midst of their South American leg, with recent performances in Brazil. Blabbermouth confirmed that the tour is scheduled to continue through mid-May 2026. After this, the band plans to take their anticipated break before beginning work on new material.
The recording of Parasomnia took place at Dream Theater’s DTHQ studio on Long Island, New York. This maintains the band’s tradition of working in familiar creative environments. Sonic Perspectives emphasized that fans eager for new Dream Theater material will need to exercise patience. The band’s methodical approach to creating music ensures that each release meets their high standards for artistic integrity and musical complexity.
