Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie has addressed fan criticism regarding the band’s shortened setlist format during their European tour. He responded to concerns in a statement shared on his Twitter account.
LaBrie’s response came after fans expressed disappointment with the reduced show lengths. Drummer Mike Portnoy had previously addressed the criticism on social media.
“Thank you, at festivals the shows are always slotted for a shorter length of time,” LaBrie said. “As for the UK, sorry Metal Mickey but even as it is we will be over here just shy of 9 weeks in order to fit the schedule that was laid out. I too think it’s unfortunate we won’t be there.”
The controversy began when fans noticed that Dream Theater’s opening show in Finland featured a single set instead of the traditional two sets with intermission format.
Mike Portnoy had earlier explained the situation. He stated: “I’ve seen some discussion online about the fact that last night’s opening show in Finland was a single set and not two sets with intermission. For the record, a lot of these summer headlining shows will have different formats; some will be a single long set, and some will be two sets with an intermission. Different promoters have booked and bill the shows differently. Sometimes the venues have curfews, etc. Honestly, I’m not sure the rhyme or the reason to it. But I too am having to adapt to each one when writing the setlists.”
The setlist format changes come during a particularly significant period for the progressive metal band. They are navigating an ambitious touring schedule.
Metal Injection reported that the band is celebrating its 40th anniversary with extensive European dates that kicked off in October 2024 and continue through this summer. This milestone tour represents one of Dream Theater’s most comprehensive European campaigns in recent years.
The current tour includes performances at several major festivals across Europe. BraveWords confirmed that the band is scheduled to perform at notable festivals like the Sweden Rock Festival on June 5 and the Copenhell Festival on June 20. These festival appearances often come with stricter time constraints that influence setlist decisions.
Adding to the tour’s significance, Dream Theater Forums revealed that some shows including those in Bulgaria are rumored to be recorded for potential release. Specific details have not been confirmed by the band. Such recordings would mark another milestone in the band’s extensive discography.
The band continues their European tour with varying setlist formats depending on venue requirements and promoter arrangements. They are balancing fan expectations with practical touring constraints.
