James Hetfield Sheds Tears Amid Elton John’s Comment On Metallica
Metallica members, Miley Cyrus, and Elton John made an appearance at the Howard Stern Show and talked about the new ‘Nothing Else Matters’ cover together. The British icon Elton John explained why he wanted to play the song, and his speech made Metallica’s lead vocalist James Hetfield get emotional and tear up.
Metallica has been busy with the re-release of their legendary 1991 album ‘Metallica,’ commonly known as ‘The Black Album.’ One of the band’s most famous tracks, ‘Nothing Else Matters,’ was featured in this album. The band also started a new project, ‘The Metallica Blacklist,’ for which some of their songs were covered by various artists, who sang the 30-year-old songs using their unique style.
Miley Cyrus collaborated with Elton John, WATT, Yo-Yo Ma, Robert Trujillo, and Chad Smith to re-create ‘Nothing Else Matters,’ and the result was worth the wait. Metallica has been on the music scene for 40 years and has heard many praising words. However, Elton John’s contribution to the album and his speech still made the band emotional.
Elton John started by saying that he wanted to play this song because he thought it clearly reflects Metallica’s talent. He continued by stressing that they are not just a heavy metal band but are also very musical and produce beautiful songs. He described ‘Nothing Else Matters’ as ‘fucking great.’
Here is what he said that made James Hetfield cry:
“I have to say. It was a no-brainer playing on this song. Metallica are probably the crème de la crème of those kind of bands. You can’t really define them. They’re not a heavy metal band. They’re a musical band. Their songs aren’t just heavy metal. They’re beautiful songs. This is such a melodic song. It’s fucking great, actually.”
Hetfield wasn’t able to speak for a while, and the drummer Lars Ulrich replied to John’s comments. Lars said that he still can’t believe the success they achieved and maintained, even after 40 years in the industry. He continued by noting that it’s ‘mindfucking’ that John is covering one of their songs and has invited them to his radio show.
Ulrich replied to John by saying:
“If you could have said 40 years ago when James and I started that 40 years later we would still be functioning, we’d be sitting here with one of the greatest stars in the world next to us, with Elton on a Zoom, doing your radio show, talking about the accomplishments, and what this record means to so many people, that would be the mindfuck of all mindfucks.”
He also reacted to Hetfield’s reaction when John was talking about the band and their music. It was inevitable to notice how many emotions Hetfield went through while John was talking, and since Ulrich was sitting beside him, he got to experience it first hand.
Here is Ulrich’s reaction to Hetfield getting emotional:
“To be able to hear what you just said, Elton, sitting next to James… the reaction I can feel in his body language when you said it was one of the greatest songs ever written… it’s just incredible to hear.”
