Tom Morello Describes Zack De La Rocha As ‘The Punk Rock Poet Freedom Fighter’

Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello shared a post on his official Instagram page celebrating his bandmate, vocalist, and lyricist Zack de la Rocha‘s 50th birthday in addition to referring to him as a ‘freedom fighter’ due to the fact that Rocha is highly interested in activism.

As you may know, Zack de la Rocha started his music career at a young age when he met Rage Against the Machine bassist Tim Commerford in elementary school and both played guitar in a band. Rocha’s career consisted of many bands like Hards Stance and Inside Out, however, he is widely known for his work with Rage Against the Machine.

In addition to this music career, Zack de la Rocha promotes left-wing political positions and advocates for the EZLN movement in Mexico. Rocha’s Chicano identity encouraged his band’s commitment to the struggles that both immigrants and people of color have to go through.

For his bandmate’s 50th birthday, Tom Morello shared a post on his official Instagram page celebrating Zack de la Rocha’s birthday with a picture of him on stage. In addition to this, due to the fact that Rocha is widely known for his activism and he’s the lyricist of the band, Morello referred to his bandmate as ‘punk rock poet freedom fighter.’

“A very happy birthday to the punk rock poet freedom fighter Zack de la Rocha, the greatest to ever do it on the mic, on the stage, or in the studio!”
