For years, James Hetfield has carried a certain reputation among Metallica fans. He is often seen as distant, private, and difficult to access. His absence from meet and greets, his reluctance to pose for fan photos, and his clear desire to protect his personal space have all helped create the image of a rock legend who keeps people at arm’s length.

But according to Architects vocalist Sam Carter, the real James Hetfield behind the scenes may be very different from that public perception.

Speaking in an interview with Jesea Lee from Sonic Temple Festival 2026, Carter reflected on Architects’ recent experiences touring with major bands including Metallica, Linkin Park, and Korn. While discussing how support acts are treated on big tours, Carter made it clear that Metallica were among the most welcoming bands Architects had ever worked with.

“We’ve been fortunate enough to tour with some massive bands in the last few years, Linkin Park, Metallica, and now Korn. And everything we’ve done, we’ve been treated so well,” Carter said. “We’ve definitely had some bands that have not been that great to us in recent years where we’ve supported. Can’t be bothered to drag them. But I will just say that Metallica really know how to treat bands and so do Linkin Park.”

Carter then revealed that Metallica’s kindness was not just a professional courtesy. It was personal, direct, and surprisingly warm — especially from Hetfield himself.

“Metallica is like the first day we got flowers. We got a cake delivered by James Hetfield,” Carter said. “Lars was hanging out with us most days. Hetfield would come in and hang out with us. They really taught us to be on it with your supports.”

For a frontman often viewed as guarded in public, that detail paints a very different picture. Hetfield was not simply approving a welcome package from a distance. According to Carter, he personally helped make Architects feel accepted on the tour.

Carter continued by explaining how much that treatment meant to the band.

“We always try and make an effort and make sure everyone’s okay,” he said. “But actually really make people feel welcome because that made us feel like a million bucks.”

What made the gesture even more meaningful, Carter added, was that none of it was done for publicity. There were no cameras, no social media content, and no obvious public relations angle. It was simply how Metallica chose to treat a support act.

“After the shows, they invited us for dinner every night,” Carter said. “We would go to a closed-off restaurant with them and eat in insane places. They don’t need to do that. There’s no cameras. There’s nothing there. There’s no one following them around with a video camera delivering the cake.”

He added: “It’s just their tour manager bringing that stuff and being like, ‘Welcome to the tour. You need anything? We got you.’ So sick.”

Carter’s comments offer a rare look at a side of Hetfield fans do not always get to see. While the Metallica frontman may avoid fan photo lines and carefully guard his private life, that does not necessarily mean he is cold or dismissive. At least in Architects’ case, Hetfield came across as generous, thoughtful, and deeply respectful toward another band sharing the stage with Metallica.

It also shows why public image can be misleading. The same person who avoids meet and greets may still be the one quietly sending flowers, delivering cake, checking in backstage, and making a younger band feel welcome without expecting anything in return.

For Sam Carter, that behind-the-scenes treatment clearly left a lasting impression. And for fans who think they already understand James Hetfield, it may be a reminder that the real story is often happening far away from the cameras.
